!*(U)&)*@#$_@#_*$_!!!!

I just posted another long post about this, and in Safari I get kicked out when I publish. ACKK!

Philip, I’d love to get in touch about some ideas/issues I want to solve with the logo :)

Re: Opportunity to gently tweak TXP logo

Philipp,

I like the direction this is heading, although I do agree with the comments above about the icon.
Keep up the good work.

Re: Opportunity to gently tweak TXP logo

Glad you like it :) I will try to give it some extra TXP style one way or another.

I first tried to only “tweak” it a little but then realized that it would be a very difficult task to make the stonecutter a strong logo. It’s just too complex. But at least I preserved the tools. And this is what TXP is to me: a tool. It also might stand for the separation of content and design. I could also go back to abstract to make it more logo-like and less like a desktop utility. I might try it this weekend.

Re: Opportunity to gently tweak TXP logo

Philipp, I’m not sure about it. Think it is too far gone from the current logo which in my opinion isn’t that bad and would prefer the “gently tweaking” initially talked about.

But then I’m not a designer…

In my opinion, you may have stated one of the best reasons to create a new one.

And perhaps we should talk about keeping that from happening again … what is going to be the copyright and usage agreement on this new work?

BTW, Philipp, I love this new version.

Re: Opportunity to gently tweak TXP logo

I repeat: I like it very much, I think it communicates a lot about TXP: it’s a tool, or even more, two tools, because it separates presentation from content. because it’s a tool for the developer (hammer) and it’s a tool for the publisher (chisel).
Also, the style of this new logo also communicates something “fun”, IMO.

Yes, now that others mentioned it, it looks a little like a desktop app icon (like some Gnome/KDE icon).
But maybe adding some details, like making the mallet-head gold, as nemoorange suggested, or also the chisel head, or even making the whole body of both tools as if they were made by shiny gold, so the color (yellow/gold) of TXP is included on both tools…

The question is what should the copyright and usage agreement be like? On the one hand I would love to keep it as free as possible but on the other I wouldn’t like to see it used in another context but TXP. And maybe from the branding point of view there should be a small set of rules – like now – to define the application of the logo. Maybe there will be a black- and a white-on-transparent png version of the logo which may be used on any background but must not be modified in color? But these considerations might go too far at this time.

  • The copyright will stay with the creator of the original artwork, as copyright is not transferrable.
  • The artefacts will have to be licensed to the general public with a free license which allow us (core dev team and users) to distribute some of them as part of Textpattern. CC-BY-ND might fit.
  • We do not have any brand policy, as we hadn’t needed one in the past. This is blurry territory at best given Dean’s role in this issue. Dean is the only one who could excert control over the “Textpattern” trademark, so to speak, but I do not expect him care a lot.
  • There’s one OSS project I am aware of which uses a style guide. Maybe you’d find some inspiration there.

Re: Opportunity to gently tweak TXP logo

Regarding the visual appearance, I wonder if there’s a reason for not using the current font (Sackers Gothic)?

Re: Opportunity to gently tweak TXP logo

I did some fine-tuning on the logos and added black and white versions.

I also tried and modified the colors of the logo but I don’t like either of the new versions because the look a little bit like luxury tools.

Re: Opportunity to gently tweak TXP logo

I’m sure that generic is the way to go because Textpattern is the tool for building websites and the logo touch comes out of combining the tools like an X. More individuality would be courterproductive.

I used a modified version of the DTL Prokyon Caps because Sackers Gothic already seemed a little outmoded to me when I decided to make Textpattern my weapon of choice back in 2005 or so. And I chose this bolder font to simply add more visual weight.

Re: Opportunity to gently tweak TXP logo

I think your first attempt was just perfect and conversely I didn’t agree with many of the suggestions/critiques posted till now.
Of course this is only my opinion, but I repeat: I think you made a professional work and this clearly implies you already considered and pondered all pros and cons of your choices.
My fear is we all fall in the infamous ‘design by commettee’ which – as we know – scientifically leads to a worse end result.

Re: Opportunity to gently tweak TXP logo

Thumbs up for me too: belipe’s logo is very nice: clean and professional.
The carver logo is nice but it less usable: this is perfect even for the favicon.
At the moment there are no rivals, for me.
