After the announcement of the partnership between MySQL-AB and SCO, porting to PostgreSQL seems a lot more interesting to me.

mysql’s technical limitations are well documented (if documented)
and it’s (dual) licensing is a bit frowned upon. that said, it’s still
the most popular db out there.
i still think the future is for postgres not only because it’s BSD license
but because of it’s rigorous source code audit (even Theo De Raadt of
OpenBSD had some good words about it) and feature wise beats
mysql hands down. people always say: if you need something primitive
and fast use mysql, if you need a database use postgres…
postgres is gaining share. albeit slowly, but very steadily. it’s just
matter of time when it becomes as popular as mysql.

This guy has some rude things to say about textpattern’s coding but as far as I am concerned Textpattern has the best interface and setup of all the blog tools I have tried. Ergo, I will use it, irrespective of whether it uses a well known database abstraction layer or an ad-hoc one.
Postgres support would be a major plus for me though as I much prefer it to MySQL.
Is anyone actively developing a PG port still?

This guy has some rude things to say about textpattern’s coding but
i haven’t looked at the code too much yet, but the bit about documentation is (sad but) true.
especially for someone coming from openbsd where documentation is maybe better than
the actual system. but just as they say on the openbsd mailing list: if you just shout about it,
but do nothing, just shut up. so for now, i just shut up.

There’s the crockery development branch, which includes experimental Postgres support, among others. The guy’s review of Textpattern is very unsophisticated, to say the least.

He obviously hasn’t found TextBook or SVN so his review is restricted. His point about empty or near-useless help pop-ups is a good one though. I don’t need them myself but I think it looks bad. This is something that needs catching-up on.

the forum is nice but i agree with the man that it is not a good
replacement for documentation. the same questions are asked
again and again, the forum db is getting bigger and more bloated,
by the day, making it harder to search.
what’s easier? reading the docs or wander around the forum for
3h to finally find the hidden piece of information?
good documentation would save a lot of forum bandwith.
texbook is nice, but far from being mature. and it’s not part of
txp, is it?
sorry for getting offtopic, but don’t downplay the importance of
good documentation.

hint taken. i come from openbsd, so don’t worry, i know when to shut up :-)
just started using txp not that long ago, give me some time to fit in the lifestyle ;-)
but you know, sending patches is easy, either it’s good, gets in, it’s bad,
goes to /dev/null. but documentation, that’s an entirely different
animal.. fighting over silly words and constructions, etc.
but my biggest concern at the moment is textile, which is far from being
documented well, and not very good either (sad but true: try putting images
into a table for example) so that’s my first target to make better.
