Re: TXP Template Contest : Starting a Pledge ! Will you sign up ?

does someone want to setup a site just for this – rather than having a thread. It might make sense to that if you are to organise you set upa site so that users can perhaps submit their designs, the site owner then adds them and using some sort of style swticher can switch the designs page and all.

Or is this part not possible yet?

The idea to use only built in tags is probably a good one, as to rev number limitation, I don’t know… Never organized a contest, I should do some benchmarking unless someone has a few guidelines to offer ?

Would it be allowed to offer templates that go in par with “unbuggy” plugins ?(Or may be just one of them providing of course the necessary files and instructions together with the packeged zip or tar file.)

(basically necessary to provide basic nav features just to get the users going on five basic main pages.)

regards, marios

Sekhu, since you managed to to be in the top forum list I would consider you the appropriate candidate to set up this site, with all the enthusiasm you got.

regards, marios

Re: TXP Template Contest : Starting a Pledge ! Will you sign up ?

Well anyone might contribute, or stepup

About the dedicated website that’s what I had in mind from the start, setup a website for this contest once we reach the 25… I have plenty of hosting space at TextDrive since my VCII account is underused at the time :) About the switcher thing, yeah, good idea but I don’t know if this can be made..

I also thought I might ask alicson if she felt like this would belong to textpattern.org, or alexandra to txpmagazine…

About the rules, please help me I am a little bit dry on this (too much sun this w-e maybe ;-p)

Re: TXP Template Contest : Starting a Pledge ! Will you sign up ?

Okey Dokey… that makes it 8.

As for guidlines, I say version should be limited to whatever revision can be downloaded from the front page. That way we can get the designers in who aren’t as comfortable with the whole SVN thing. Plus, this is the version that most end users are likely to install…

Beyond that, maybe get consensus on the plugin thing. The base system is pretty strong so I don’t thing we need plugins neccessarily. As long as there is a well thought out scheme for headers and such, most plugins like rss_suparchive should take to the look and feel pretty well if more advanced users decide to add them later.

Re: TXP Template Contest : Starting a Pledge ! Will you sign up ?

Judging by the svn log and the date of the zip, that would be revision 335.

Only problem is that revision is partly broken in some key places, and we’re already up to 443 since then. Having rc3 available through deanload is fine, but it sucks if its not getting updated every once in a while with bug fixes. Makes me want to wait for 1.0, but when that’ll be is anyone’s guess, so that’s no good.

I also volunteer to help this effort in other ways (outside creating a template), if I’m needed anywhere.

Re: TXP Template Contest : Starting a Pledge ! Will you sign up ?

Bizartist, Mary, glad to have you both on board :-))

Agree with you Mary, I had also checked, judging from the date it’s around rev330 which is indeed broken. We should setlle for the last available stable SVN and make it available on the contest website once it starts.

And I’ll certainly take up on that help offer :)

Re: TXP Template Contest : Starting a Pledge ! Will you sign up ?

There’s an r360 available from my site which I believe was pretty stable and would work with all of the updated plug-ins too I think if they are allowed in the competition. I could make r416 available if you preferred as the “offset” has been sorted by then.

I’ve signed up. I contributed one template in the past, but it was based on Kubrick. I promise not to do that this time. :)

Re: TXP Template Contest : Starting a Pledge ! Will you sign up ?

I have signed up. I will do my best, but I have never created a template—just my own pages. I know I can do something using txp. Whether anyone would want to use it is another matter. ;)

I’m going to be away for three weeks. If I survive being offline I will catch up with everything when I return.

Re: TXP Template Contest : Starting a Pledge ! Will you sign up ?

Jennifer, MsContrary thanks and welcome on board :-)
I really appreciate all of you guys signing up !

thebombsite, rev416 would be nice. As for plugins, most seem to think we shouldn’t use them, but after I gave this some thought, I started to realize how many plugins I use early on in my designs and started to wonder how I could do something nice without them…

It could be nice to have at least plugins like glx_hl_current, hak_textile_tags (for user friendly comments), ob1_title for better title management, rei_comments_invite for those nice options it adds…etc. But then again it would make things more complex for the user…

I truly don’t know wether or not we should autorize plugin for this contest. I guess it depends what the goal is : Do we try to create all purpose templates, easily set-up and customizable, with “basic” features ? Or do we aim to create “showcase” templates, feature-packed, harder to set-up but which could show off what txp can do ?

I truly don’t know what path we should take, though I’d have a slight preference for the second option I’ll admit :-p The key in this scenario would be not over doing it and still aim at a wide enough audience.

What do you think ?

Re: TXP Template Contest : Starting a Pledge ! Will you sign up ?

My opinion is that plugins should be allowed. Why not? Everyone can grab any plugin from Textpattern Resources site. Everyone is at the same starting point.

As for the goal – showcase or purpose templates – I think we shouldn’t limit this by not using plugins. A good template doesn’t necessarily mean a lot of features (plugins). It’s only about using the right tool for the job. Just my two cents, I even didn’t sign up yet. I’m not sure if I can meet the deadline.

Re: TXP Template Contest : Starting a Pledge ! Will you sign up ?

Thanks for your POV on this, I agree on “using the right tool for the job” approach,

About the deadline :

June 30th is just the deadline for signing up, NOT of course the deadline to submit your template

I think we should have time to complete our template, don’t know what could be realistic with the holidays and all, one month ? two ? That would make the submission deadline at the end of August or beginning of september… maybe too far ?

Any input appreciated there :)

Re: TXP Template Contest : Starting a Pledge ! Will you sign up ?

Jaro:

There is no deadline yet, I think. The deadline set is just for signing up. :)

davidm:

I too have a slight preference for option number two. It’s much more fun that way. But on the other hand it’s more nice than need. One doesen’t need allt the cool plugins to make a fine looking site.

But then again, it all depends on what we’re trying to do. Maybe there could be two parts of the contest? One without the plugins, just showing off nice all purpose templates for TxP and another to show off what can be done with all the cool plugins that are available.
