What’s your current price point on the above service? Where is the datacenter located country-wise?

$898.20 for three years, so $24.95 per month. Although it is an American company, the company operates 11 datacenters worldwide. My site is hosted in Japan.

Re: Who Does Your Textpattern Hosting?: July 2021 Edition

Dreamhost has a comparable VPN plan at $24.99/month for 3 years with a sizable discount for the first 3 years.

Basics

  • 60GB NVMe SSD Storage
  • Unmetred bandwidth
  • Unlimited websites, subdomains, and email addresses
  • etc

Their support is fine, and they also have an AI assistant which can quickly answer most of the questions (although you may have to push it sometimes).

What I do miss from them is the online real time assistance by a real person. Now, it is email based.

Thank you, Yiannis. I will check them out. I already noticed that they are still independent, which is really important these days.

My current hosting service does have live chat with a real support person, but over the last year or two I have rarely found it helpful. Recently, I used their ticketing system and was surprised by the excellent assistance I received. But I don’t know if I just got lucky to to get connected with a very responsible person.

because they have real people offering real human support i would recommend you chat with the opalstack team to see if they can meet your needs.

Thank you!

I just visited the site. It looks a bit intimidating to a non-developer like myself…

FWIW, I’m not a developer and OpalStack has been a reliable and good host for my sites. Their service is indeed responsive and human.

That is extremely helpful and encouraging to know. Thanks for sharing this experience.

Re: Who Does Your Textpattern Hosting?: July 2021 Edition

There is also servus.at whis is administered by a wonderful bunch of people, and is subsidised by the Austrian ministry of culture (I think). It is based in Linz, hosts arts sites, and you pay what you think is fair. This is from their about section:

servus.at operates an independent data centre for artists and cultural professionals, alternative educational institutions, independent radio stations, universities and NGOs. We do not sell any data to third parties and do not analyse the content of our members. A high degree of voluntary work and commitment goes into our work. We are financed by membership fees, donations and grants. With your donation, you support us in our activities or in the purchase of hardware. Donations are used exclusively for the purpose of our organisation.

Yeah, the Opalstack hosting service is fairly OK. The control panel is a little intimidating at first, and the lingo used a little obscure, but once you get it, the works well.

And as noted, the support team is excellent and fast.

Thanks for the reminder. I’ve heard good things about it.

And as I move away fully out of commercial web stuff, that might be a good fit for some projects.

Just visited the site. I have not yet encountered anything like this. What a fascinating approach!

It is a bit outside what I can currently afford because according to their explanations I would probably be considered a cultural association:

Association membership for art and cultural associations and collectives. The membership fee is 30 euros per month (360 euros per year).

Thanks for sharing, Yiannis.
