Are you sure all files inside /textpattern/ are correctly updated?

the content-type for the css file(s) is set in /textpattern/publish.php I think.

Maybe try to do a ”fresh” install – delete all files inside /textpattern/ except config.php, and eventually a .htaccess file.

Upload all files from the downloaded textpattern 4.7.3 (or higher): index.php. css.php and all files inside /textpattern/

Access skewray.com/textpattern/, login to finish the updating.
Access the public side, all should work correctly.

It looks like you got it working again. Well done! If you can, though, try updating right up to the current textpattern version and a more recent PHP. If the css is not quite right, I’m sure we at the forum can assist in getting it working. I suspect cbs_category_list can be replaced with txp:category_list if it’s not compatible with more recent textpattern versions. A lot of the core tags have become more powerful and flexible over the years thanks to the dev’s efforts.

Sure, but that did not apply in this case (that /textpattern/plugin/ folder is 4.8). And with recentish Textpattern versions, the /textpattern/admin-themes/ could contain user configuration – alternative admin theme, custom.css or custom.js files. At least with the plugins folder, the content is re-generated after the user logs in.

Glad to see that the site is now up in full glory!

I had a brainwave – if CSS broke on upgrade, just change the site to use a static CSS file instead of css.php. So, I did that before the upgrade to 4.7.3. The result is that the public website works great, but the admin side is broken; the pull-downs on the top menu bar don’t appear when clicked. The admin site still looks the same, so it is using css.php fine. There must be some other problem.

Any suggestions?

First thought: log out, clear all browser caches, and try again. Or force reload maybe.

Can you access the diagnostics panel: domain.tld/textpattern/index.php?event=diag and report any unexpected warning our error ?

(if necessary, copy the last part of that URL above, after the ?, and replace the existing in the browser location bar)

Does disabling the plugin hpw_admincss-0.1 help at all?

If your installation is a stock v4.7.3 version, then it also accesses a regular .css file from the respective /admin-themes/{theme-name}/assets/css/textpattern.css folder. The plugin, however, uses css.php to serve the css file, which was the problem you were having on the front end.

If you want to still have your admin css changes, copy what you have in your admin stylesheet in the Presentation › Styles pane and save it in a file called custom.css. Put that next to the textpattern.css in the admin-theme you are using and they should be used automatically. That certainly works in more recent versions. Should it not work automatically in 4.7.3, then follow the instructions written here. You shouldn’t need how_admincss at all after that.

The admin site looks like it always has, so it must be getting CSS like it always has. The only issue is that the three pull-down menus don’t pull down. Consequently, I have no way to disable plugins, or even see them. The admin panel opens up with my article list, and I can’t go to another admin section.

The admin panel opens up with my article list, and I can’t go to another admin section.

In the URL bar, just add the following to your TLD:

/textpattern/index.php?event=plugin

In bad weather I never leave home without wet_plugout, smd_where_used and adi_form_links

Cool – if I knew all the events, I could awkwardly navigate without the pull-downs.

I disabled the hpw-admincss plugin and refreshed the screen. No change, as far as I can tell. Pull-downs are still inoperative.

I am glad that I wrote (functioning) scripts to quickly upgrade and reverse.

Update: I just did the above – looked up the event for each pull-down item and made a set of links. I guess this issue is, um, mitigated?

Onward to higher levels of php and TP 4.8….

When I try php 7.4 & tp 4.7.3, I get an error message on the home page:

Deprecated: Function get_magic_quotes_gpc() is deprecated in <mysite>/textpattern/lib/constants.php on line 136

Update: Just changed the two get_magic_quotes_gpc() to FALSE. Seems to have fixed that…

Your menu bar issue is puzzling… just to be sure: you click on one of the top level items, and nothing happens?

Can you check if the browser console reports any error (in the developer tools) – both when you load the page and when you click on the top level menu items?

Where is that emoji for a solar powered submarine when you need it ?
