fwiw, you pushed the Submit button, and an email arrived here – 19:39JST according to the inbox.

That’s delayed, I believe it should be almost instant (i.e. no inherent delay at a PHP level).

I’m building a replacement server since these nagging email issues are going to be more easily (and time-efficiently) solved with a blank slate email setup. I’ll monitor the queue and push any stuck emails through, then when we flip at the weekend it should DEFINITELY go away since all the hostnames and such will be correct, and Postfix / Sendmail should work as expected.

I’ve gradually made things sufficiently modular so that moving servers is almost too easy, and the new server will be a whizzy AMD EPYC-powered thing for an extra USD per month.

Indeed, by 15 minutes if the mail headers are telling the truth

tss, tss, dropping that lovely mister Intel are we ? Let’s cheer on that.

I hear good things about those chips, in terms of perf/watt and ecological footprint.

I am all in favour of efficiency, performance, and value for money. We’re now on the new (AMD) server and when I tap Submit it should fire off an email to you, Philippe. It should be the same timestamp as this post. Please report back, if you could. Thank you.

edit: Ugh…our IP was clear earlier on, now it’s not…

Requested removal. Currently we’re clear of any blocklist apart from UCEPROTECTL3: mxtoolbox.com/SuperTool.aspx?action=blacklist%3atornado.textpattern.net&run=toolpage

Nothing we can really do about the UCEPROTECTL3 block as they block various DigitalOcean ranges (as well as many other DIY cloud providers).

edit #2: We’re no longer listed on the Proofpoint blocklist, but Apple being Apple, there is a delay in this clearing…and the mail queue is still saying we’re blocked by Apple.

Philippe – thanks for your patience, I’ll bludgeon the mail queue again in a few hours and push your emails through.

edit #3: Mail queue is clear.

15:39JST is 06:39UTC, so that was me. It was the old server (tribune), they had stacked up there since my last check, so I pushed them through as part of the forum migration. Who knows what fun and games this new server will bring, eh?

Hopefully it will be real fun! The new server feels very fast right now (e.g. login happens instantly, in the past few months there was always a small delay between submitting credentials and post-login redirect).

On the good news front:

Timestamp of your comment: 20:43:15 JST (11:43:15 UTC)
Email notification received: 20:43 (JST)

And from my end…:

$ sudo mailq
Mail queue is empty

This is looking hopeful.

Reading up on this UCEPROTECT seems more like a Protection Racket than an actual useful service. That’s a nice IP address you have there. It would be a shame if something happened to it.

Recently, an RBL provider called UCEPROTECT has incorrectly blacklisted a very large number of IP ranges. This has also been confirmed by major security and anti-spam service providers such as Sucuri. In the Sucuri investigation, an IP address was blacklisted for spamming even though it was not even a mail server. – Beware: UCEPROTECT RBL Email Scam

Apparently, a lot of DigitalOcean IPs are added to some SPAM database called UCEPROTECT [2] and I just found out that some large companies (microsoft/outlook exchange etc) uses this list to block emails from an entire domain IF this domain is on this list. – DigitalOcean IPs added to UCEPROTECTL3 Spam list and they want money?

Our IPs aren’t the only ones impacted by this malicious RBL, however. They have also blocked Barracuda’s email servers, a highly respected security company. Warnings about UCEPROTECT can also be found from reputable sources including KonTech, Linode, TitanHQ, spiceworks, and Word to the Wise, along with discussions about their most recent campaign on Twitter. – UCEPROTECT: When RBLs Go Bad

There are some posts that imply this is a recent development but here is a complaint from 2009: UCEPROTECT Extortion Service: All Your Mails Are Belong To Us!

Exactly this. I’m not concerned about deliverability on that side of things, and I’m not getting my wallet out, either.

There are many blocklists from many providers, most removal processes are fairly sane, a lot are automated. It rarely takes more than a few hours for blocked IPs to be removed, usually.

Re: Email notifications fail ?

After monitoring the notification mail for a few days, delivery works as expected !

PS – that UCEPROTECT looks indeed like a stupid little racket copied out of cheap mafia movies.
