You did see that that propublica article is from 2016, yes ?

lol. No, actually, I did not. I seem to miss details like that easily when using my phone. And my frickin’ eyes get worse by the second. It was shared in fedi stream yesterday and I made the mistake of assuming it was timely. Apparently the sharer did too. Only half my fault!

Oh well, I still need to delete that useless account. Just need to make sure that stupid email isn’t used on something else that I’ll be locked out of if not careful.

Re: Fookin' GAFM, again

It is OK, in a way as few people understand how far G. goes to profile them.

Oh, yes, and damn eyes. Those are not improving here either. [/sigh]

Re: Fookin' GAFM, again

Hope for the future? Or too little too late?

Judging by how much today’s capitalism and militarism feeds and relies on the financial, energy, and technology sectors, me thinks the latter.

But I’ll take what I can get. Seeing the goliaths stumble and crumble is still satisfying, even if we’re crushed by their fall.

How is this hope for the future? The recruits with the most qualms about technology decide not to work at Google et al while the ones with the least go right ahead. And then make their fortunes and start the new startups with the same mindset they started with.

Re: Fookin' GAFM, again

We can agree, Michael. There’s no hope. None at all.

Re: Fookin' GAFM, again

You know much of this but this is a very clear explanation of why Gargle is a dictator unlike anything the world has known

There are two footnotes. The first one is well worth reading. “How did Gargle become the internet’s censor and master manipulator, blocking access to millions of websites?” The second sounds interesting too.

Re: Fookin' GAFM, again

Here’s a good article and a great video full of clarity about surveillance.

There are many examples of Covid19 bringing out the best in people, people coming together to help their neighbours and volunteering their time, money and resources to the health services and the key workers. Many comments and links on this forum are heartwarming, inspired, creative and thoughtful too (much appreciated by me even if I haven’t said so).

When faced with a huge challenge, the best of us is quite capable of shining through. We have all the resilience, kindness and courage we need to make our world incredibly beautiful in spite of all that is happening. Perhaps the human spirit will also soon defeat the other powerful unseen enemies that have already infected us all. There is always HOPE: it is eternal, it is part of what keeps us alive, it is one of the truly real qualities that cannot be killed and we are so fortunate that hope is so accessible right here within us.

Yes indeed. I think Shoshana Zuboff’s book is on my wish list. It looks like a must-read.

She does and here’s a wonderful little story of where and how the awakening and rebellion should begin.
