ajw_admin_workflow / 'can be done with a vanilla install now' How?

Hi TXPers,

I installed this svelte plugin (ajw_admin_workflow) a long time ago for a multi-publishing site I am doing1.

At the time I explained to TXP newbies (writer, editor, me, etc) about how we could mimic a publishing process with this excellent tool (TXP) with this excellent plugin.

There were literal “Oo’s” and “Ah’s” at the wonderfully easy way a writer could hand-off an article to an editor (ownership changed, the new person responsible was emailed, all done in a click, all from the best context — the article in question).

I am returning to the project and find lovely, lovely, lovely TXP 4.2 has left this plugin behind. {:-( Edit: I may be wrong (if so, sorry, see later comment)

Can someone pretty-please tell me if I am missing something, (likely), or is the loss of this plugin a real dent in the work-flow power of TXP in a structured publishing setup?

Not tried to install it with 4.2 btw, I am just intrigued by the “can be done with vanilla” and would love to learn how (I’ll go try the plugin with 4.2 of course).

So long, and thanks for all the fish.

Cheers, -Alan

Hi Alan, it can’t be done in the Write screen like the plugin does, but in the Articles view you can use the checkboxes and then ‘With selected’ > ‘Change author’ (bottom of the article list).

Hi Els, thanks, yes I use that Articles list, it’s no problem, I was just keen to make sure I hadn’t missed something, thanks for confirming.

I remember at the time when I found the plugin though, how particularly well this worked with writers whose focus was the article and saving it and moving it on to the Editor.

Do you think this is worth suggesting as a feature? If I had the skill, I would love to try to write a new plugin to do this — it feels like it might not be too hard (a rash statement, I don’t know what I’m talking about!).

Cheers, -Alan

Hi Alan. What do you mean by saying that this plugin has been left behind? As far as I can remember, you can still use it on TXP 4.2.0, if you prefer go that way. I also think that working on the write tab has sometimes its advantages. :) Is this not working for you?

Re: ajw_admin_workflow / 'can be done with a vanilla install now' How?

Hi Zana, I am so sorry for making this assumption, I am also delighted if you are right and it works with 4.2 =)

I read this:

Notice: This thread is archived, this can be done with a vanilla install now.

…and assumed from the word ‘archived’ that it was somehow not relevant (so I assumed that meant no longer compatible as of 4.2).

Once again, my apologies, I will go and try it in due course and report back here — thank you for pointing out my wrong assumption! :)

Cheers, -Alan

Hi Alan, no need to apologize!

From About the plugins archives forum:

This forum is listing all plugins which have been superseded by either newer versions or by txp tags.

It doesn’t say the plugins are no longer compatible with the latest Txp version. I’m not so sure we should elaborate on that, because though some – like ajw_admin_workflow – will still work, most of the archived plugins are not maintained anymore and will likely cause trouble sooner or later.

Re: ajw_admin_workflow / 'can be done with a vanilla install now' How?

For anyone trying to get this plugin working with Txp 4.5 onward, it’s an easy edit to the plugin.

Since the “More” section has been removed from the Write tab, it no longer has a place to attach itself. Easily fixed by telling it to attach elsewhere. :)

In the plugin code find:
Line 91: echo dom_attach('more', join(n,$out));

Change ‘more’ to another div id on the page. For example if you want it added below the timestamp settings and above the save button, change it to “dates_group”.

Still handy to be able to change ownership from the write tab.

Here is a “modernized” 4.6-version. It will insert (for privileged users only) an author select box into Meta section of the Write tab:

# Name: etc_author_select v0.1
# Type: Admin/AJAX plugin
#
# Author:
# URL:
# Recommended load order: 5

Re: ajw_admin_workflow / 'can be done with a vanilla install now' How?

I’ve never given this plugin thought before. Native editorial workflow via revamping the article “status” settings always seemed like a reasonable vector to implementing workflow in core, but there was always some arguments against it each time brought up.

Thanks, etc, for giving this plugin a loving rub! ;)

Re: ajw_admin_workflow / 'can be done with a vanilla install now' How?

Thanks, Destry! I have mainly written it for textpattern.tips, since Jonathan often posts articles for other’s account. But if some day txp becomes mutli-author, the authors assignment could migrate to the Write tab, I think.
