Re: Feedback to: Textpattern CMS 4.6.0 beta released

Couple of observations/comments on the new admin theme.

The some of the “buttons” currently styled as links, to my mind look a bit shy:

might they be better looking like proper buttons?

And using a Phillips head screw for delete:

could be better as a more conventional dustbin (an X is generally used for “close”):

@gomedia

Those secondary links I want to keep subtle (not as buttons) as the screen looked a whole lot more cluttered when they were buttons.

Valid point about the delete icon – I will try the trash can and see.

hmm, makes it look like windows 95… (and that is not a positive assessment!) And I disagree that the “x”, cross mark ‘generally’ is associated with “close”. I see it often used for “delete”.

‘x’ is ambiguous. The trashcan is not. O/S wars are over.

What do OS wars have to with anything?

I may also try the X icon in red, as that is also acceptable UI from my reading. The trash icon does look a bit shit.

Stack exchange says…. sort of inconclusive, but a red hand-drawn ‘x’ is nudging ahead of the field.

Is it (not)? I always associate a trashcan with deleting-but-recoverable – see: moving files to the trashcan on various desktop OS. The ‘X’ mark on the other hand is associated with permanently remove (delete) and no-way-to-recover. Which is actually what the “destroy” button under discussion does. A red ‘X’ mark a suggested by Phil might be a more acceptable solution – colour clashes aside. And it is certainly much less windows 95 style garish.

x is normally associated to close I think as used in, tabs, browser windows, lightbox type slideshows, etc.

I also agree that the trash also has other connotations.

Do we actually need an icon?

Agree. They are clearly links, and follow a text/icon convention. Good enough.

Actually, every app on my phone uses this for deletion: ⛔️, though more of a flat style than that ugly emoji shite.

OK, regarding delete symbol, see the following tweets:

Whichever wins out, we will use. Just vote via the tweets, I think it’s been discussed enough here now :)

Since it’s now imperative that my first tweet be world-shatteringly important (given I’ve had an account for about six years and never tweeted) I’m going to vote here instead:

Cross.

(I think the red minus looks way too much like a no-entry sign).
