Just as a note, I have tried to contact Dean Allen and had no response whatsoever. I have never had any correspondence with Dean.

Yes, our biggest fears realized.

I own textpattern.io as a security in case current domains go belly-up.

But the problem is, when and if the current domains go belly up, how do you redirect them to Textpattern.io?

The Textpattern brand may ultimately lay in the hands of Dean, it may not. I’m not a lawyer but even though he has effectively had nothing to do with the project fro 10 years+ I assume the brand is his until he says otherwise.

Yes, he owns the Textpattern brand name, even though he’s been absent for 10 years. We all work for Dean.

Textpattern can be forked into an entirely new project with a new brand and new owners as long as past contributors are credited, based on it’s license. However, I would really be reluctant to do that since Textpattern now has a long history and affection from users past and present.

Done, and done, for all intentional purposes, txp:tag is my slice of the Textpattern pie. Should everything go belly up, I just have to replace Textpattern.com with wherever the project moves to, I’m protected.

txptag is not a fork, it’s a repackaging, perfectly legal in the GPL license.

Debian (textpattern) -> Ubuntu (txptag)

Re: Domains

Does Dean own txp? That’s txp not textpattern. txp the tag and txp the brand, because perhaps it has become a brand too? I’m not a lawyer but would hazard a guess that the same applies to txp as to textpattern.

Dang, I forgot txpq.com in my post above, sorry Peter.

txp:tags are an api, while Textpattern is a brand.

There are many txp(something) .com domains available if we wanted to keep ties with Textpattern

NIce, go with the old carver image – it redirects to Textpattern.com, intentional?

yep!

start rebranding if you wish.

whatever is done it is obvious that the community can no longer stay with textpattern.com given the non-cooperation from Dean. Fish or cut bait.

Re: Domains

I’ve just registered txpcms.com, txpcms.net and txpcms.org. Have I jumped the gun?

Re: Domains

If changing domains — and assuming an entirely different brand name wasn’t wanted in the process — txpcms is a pretty good option considering how “txp” is so commonly used.

Only one of those TLDs is needed in that case (probably .com) because you (not Dean) would have DNS zone control at that point, thus you could do all the DNS zone file management you wanted without need for extra domains.

For example:

  • forum.txpcms
  • docs.txpcms
  • themes.txpcms
  • plugins.txpcms
  • etc

At least I think so. I’m not a DNS expert by any means. Someone correct me if I’m wrong, because I’d like to understand zone records better.

Of course, owning the other domains prevents them from being used, but I doubt anyone would actually want “txpcms” for any other reason.

Then again, textpattern.co and textpattern.io are also secured by people here, I think, and those would work too.

Re: Domains

For those worried about the impact of changing the domain at all, I don’t think you should worry. Look at that graph. People don’t even remember “Textpattern” except for those in this forum and their clients. A little domain rebranding would probably be a good thing, in fact. Generate some buzz. It certainly wouldn’t hurt anything.

It also just occurs to me, looking at that map, that Sacripant is mistaken to think there are more non-English speaking users than otherwise. Thus my proposal for the magazine was dead on arrival. The response so far (none) hasn’t suggested otherwise either.
