kill off sbl.spamhaus.org
Since we are on a killing spree should we also put sbl.spamhaus.org to rest as the default spamlist? We had so many complains regarding the speed of the sites with this one on. In fact the uri returns a 404.

The http endpoint at sbl.spamhaus.org returns a 404, but the behind-the-scenes stuff should (might) still work.

indeed it might but we still received a large number of complains about pages slowing down to unacceptable speeds when sbl.spamhaus.org is on and comments are enabled. I don’t think that we should include it in the default installs. If anyone wants it, they can add it manually in the field.

Are we doing it wrong, or is Spamhaus just slow?
Edit: or, something I just thought of – is the correct combination of lots of comments on cheap and/or terrible shared web hosting happening more often? I haven’t personally had it happen to me, but I’ve helped clients complaining of slow Textpatterns and – yes – it’s SBL checking to blame. Also, we should clip this thread and fork another to discuss it elsewhere. Are you OK with that, Yiannis?

I’ve always deleted it from any new installs. I’m fine with removing – the pophelp explains the feature quite well if people do want to add urls to the field manually.

If some URLs are added to the help, it will help those who would want to enable it.

I’m inclined to +1 your proposal, Yiannis – so, leave as-is for existing sites and remove from 4.6 onwards, right?

yes. Basically we keep the field but we serve it empty.
