Fair enough… sounds like a job for a plugin. The latest tinymce will do edit in place, it would just have to be hooked into the article save mechanism.
Anyone feel like a challenge?

Have you tried my front_edit plugin ?
Drag&drop for image will be supported in next version.
I would appreciate any comment about usability, ease of use and so forth
