TXP user base
Anyone have any handle on — or would care to guess at — the number of TXP users / sites there might be out there?
Based on the number of registered forum users and the download counts over the past few years — with rough adjustments made for people downloading duplicate copies — plus assumptions made from the number of downloads of my own plugins (trying to exclude the bots), I’ve made a moist-finger-in-the-air estimate. Just curious if anybody else has a feel for what our user base is.
The reason? It’s that time of year again: re-pimping my CV/Resumé and not trying to tell (too many!) porkies…

Re: TXP user base
Is this something to consider? Does it even do something? I always thought it was meant for getting an idea of the number of active users.
The number of registered forum users doesn’t seem to be a very reliable base for your estimate; lots of ‘users’ who never posted – and therefore probably never used Txp – or would-be spammers who never even spammed ;)

Unfortunately I don’t think it does. Not even sure where it goes, or whether it’s stored. Supposedly a counter for the number of TXP articles published out there, but I’m not sure on its accuracy. Even if I could find where it’s stored!

Yeah, I figured as much, but thanks for clarifying my suspicions. This was the statistic I put least faith in… in fact I think I divided it by 2 :-)

Re: TXP user base
I just counted 12667 registered users with zero posts (total registered users is 18316). Of course among those there will be actual Txp users. And there will be Txp users who didn’t even register. But I have no idea how to estimate how many they are…

Eeek! That’s way below my estimation. I’ll get my coat…

Re: TXP user base
The number of unregistered users could be higher than you think if you consider how many “customers” of Txp developers there are who are not interested in the detail provided that their shiny new site works the way they want it. Even if it doesn’t they are more likely to turn to the original developer than come here.
Also there has been something around 50,000 downloads from Textgarden and that is just the ones hosted there. If you add up all the ones downloaded via Textplates you are looking at a pretty large total. Of course several themes can be downloaded by a single user so this is also a confusing method to use.
There are over 1000 sites registered on “We Love Textpattern” and I would think that is a very small portion.

Hey stef. Why not put some kind of ping back mechanism (on by default, off by a pref) into TXP, that can track this stuff.

Seriously just a feeling, but I would say below 5% of the WordPress’ user count. Based on IRL, my plugin downloads and general talk around web. Oh, well I love TXP even that if the user base is really small.
Actually, there is no fuzz about TXP as far as I’m aware. I did bit of look at the popular tech forums I’m part of. There are thousands and thousands of threads about Joomla, WordPress etc, but not much about TXP. I didn’t find much conversations about TXP outside strictly web development, cms and TXP related forums… and most of those web forums/sites are there just for ad revenue.
Interestings fact is that some other CMS products have group meetings even in Finland (population five million), wheres TXP doesn’t. But marketing and the “corporation” behind the product have a lot of to do with that. TXP has none. Tho, It doesn’t matter to me.

Have you excluded spam and bots? If not, the real number is way lower, and some of the downloaders are just trying TXP and then moving on. Anyway, that number is good, Stuart. Good to see that the site is active :-)
For example even Rahforum has got 16,000 downloads by that method since April 23, 2009. How much of that is bot activity is a mystery ;-)

Remember that some of us might have searched the web and submitted sites to WeLoveTXP.

Re: TXP user base
Look this topic – in 2007 it was 87k search results. Now – 167k :)
The lasе thing – is to count coefficient-multiplier – how much site owners delete/disable coments. I think it is 1 to 5. So, over million jf txp sites :)

Heh, I would love if it was so :-) Too bad that the search phrase doesn’t match the actual first comment, but it matches the words with Google’s algorithm, and the results are relative. Altho, it would be cool if even Wordpress, Blogspot and Facebook used TXP ;-) Anyways,
- With the search I get 135k hits.
- Searching the exact Donald Swain’s comment I get under 7k hits.
- With either of the searches (relative or exact), only 6 of the first 10 results are actually TXP sites.

Re: TXP user base
Hehe, thanks guys. All good stuff.
So, Gocom, given your “less than 5% of Wordpress” thing, according to the WP Stats page, let’s say we believe that there are about 10 million blog publishers. 5% of that is about 50k. Sounds a lot, but I dunno.
Of course, it’s easier to count “users” of WP because it’s aimed at bloggers so they have a 1:1 mapping of downloads:users (very roughly, of course). A TXP user is either a designer or perhaps someone who puts a site in for a company and that company are then the users of the system. I guess it depends how we define users: designers/people who create sites using TXP, or end users, or both.
All I’m trying to say is something like “An active Textpattern code contributor: a CMS with an estimated NNN users”. So what can I realistically put for NNN without telling outright lies? 1 000? 5 000? 10 000? 20 000? 50 000? Or should I reword it entirely and mention something we can count more reliably? Like the number of atoms in this pizza I’m going to have for lunch :-)
