Re: Urgent call to action from creator of MySQL

Well, Sun is no more, and I don’t know if this has anything do do with Oracle or not but I can’t download a damn copy of MySQL 5.1.44 64bit for Mac 10.6 without having to give a whole slough of personal data, which apparently will take 7 days to process. WTF?
No problems here. I reach this page, which shows some kind of login box and under it, a link » No thanks, just take me to the downloads!’
Follow that link and download what you need.
Where is that emoji for a solar powered submarine when you need it ?

Re: Urgent call to action from creator of MySQL
Destry, MySQL accounts are and were optional. You can of course register and wait for the week as they do validate all site user accounts. Yes, it’s user account to the forums, not something that is used to limit downloading. EVen that the site makes it seem that way (but it also describes what the acount is for) ;)
The download mirrors are right there (on the same page as always were, hidden with fancy JavaScript effects) as Philippe said.

Schooled.
Thanks Philippe. Yep, there’s clearly some usability issues with that link’s design and placement. Hell, with that site, period.
Gocom, one of the first things Oracle should do, if it wants to do some good, is redesign that site. A person shouldn’t have to stop and read/scour the website to get a simple download. I’ve only had to go there…I can’t even remember…I think 2008 was the last time so I don’t have its particularities memorized. Nevertheless, I’m not a web novice. In fact UX is up my alley, so there’s clearly some problems with that site. When that site loads, I should be presented with a clear, direct path for Download > Mirrors > France > File without reading anything except the path cues. Interfering me with opting out of the forum is bad practice, and they’ve executed the design poorly, if it wasn’t intentional.
But like I said, “schooled.” And thank you. :)

Re: Urgent call to action from creator of MySQL
I’m looking for a .tar package I can uncurl. Isn’t there one of those around somewhere? I’m following Dan Benjamin’s doc for installing MySQL on SL (which I’ve done before on Leopard and like a lot) but this .dmg/.pkg stuff is throwing me off.
Do you uncurl a .pkg file the same way as .tar?

Ed. Never mind, I found it!

Re: Urgent call to action from creator of MySQL
Getting back to the original topic, here are some interesting notes on Oracle’s acquisition of MySQL; jump down to the part headed MySQL and the Database Market.
Seems for the moment there’s nothing to worry about. A lot of people keeping an eye on things, but nobody bolting for the hills yet.
