  • Search/filter categories

All excellent enhancements that get my vote as well as Jakob’s mini-tabs.

Re: Changing the Categories tab

I have a lot of categories in a tree structure, which makes it easy to find them if they are displayed in a tree structure as they are now.

Yes, good point. I do too and that’s one of the things I’d miss if it were done the way I originally posted. Which is why it’s definitely not going to be done that way! This is my tech-playground and if it doesn’t work, it doesn’t work. Perhaps it’s simpler to just see about adding change parent to the with_selected tool and leave it at that.

I’m going to have a think about methods in which we can have the best of both worlds: the convenience of more with_selected options and perhaps allowing a parent/Title to be assigned at creation time, combined with a way to easily see the tree structure at a glance as it is now. It might be possible to toggle the view between list and tree, storing your preference, but I’d like to avoid that and try to do it in one. Perhaps that’s a pipe dream…

I’m not sure if paging helps or hinders the process. It may just be overkill, what does everyone think? Do you have so many categories that they become unmanageable and you’re forever scrolling up and down? Or is it fine just the way it is and you can live without seeing 15/50/whatever per page?

If anybody with better UI skillz than me has anything to add to this discussion, please put your ideas forward.

Re: Changing the Categories tab

I also agree with the change, and +1 for the ability to add multiple categories at once, but i dont know how to handle that!

Re: Changing the Categories tab

An oldie but a goodie…

After inputting about 50 cats and then changing their parent manually one by one, mrdale wonders if there are still plans to make this kind of thing easier.

I feel your pain. I did the same thing the other day and the air was blue. Still on the list.

A nice interim solution, thanks Els. Of course if you were creating cats from scratch you could also do it at the same time as creating an article using smd_write_cats. The parent -> child1, parent -> child2, ... notation can help. Even though it only assigns the first two to the article itself, it’ll create all the others for you if you keep on listing them (if you put , parent -> into your copy n paste buffer it’s a fairly quick process).
