four little changes for 4.0.7

General:

  • change admin tabs bg images to this set (yeah, the links on that post are broken, I will try to upload them somewhere else). Those tabs are much nicer and gives TxP admin side a fresher look. Just a little change, it doesn’t make any hurt, I think.

on “Write” tab

  • add “Title” above the title input field
  • add “Body” above the textarea

on “Plugins” tab

  • make the textarea just a little higher, so you can see there is some weird base64 code pasted there.

Or is it too cluttering?

edit: added the request for a higher textarea on “Plugin” tab.

Re: four little changes for 4.0.7

The positioning of those fields makes it obvious enough what their purpose is (IMHO). Adding a description just takes up screen space.

Re: four little changes for 4.0.7

I can’t speak for the bg images (haven’t seen them) – but I’m all for the description addition.

Yeah it takes up screen space – but only 2 lines – are there any other reasons it’s not a good idea?
Adding these descriptions would seem to make things clearer – especially for the less experienced user.
(I don’t see a detriment to the more experienced user other than 2 lines of screen space.)

Just my 2 cents. (USD of course – so that’s not worth much)

Re: four little changes for 4.0.7

I’ve contacted patchwork (author of the images I’m suggesting for tabs) to see if he can fix the broken links to the zipped files.

re: the labels for title and body

I was writing a little doc help for a client and I thought it may not look too obvious what those two fields could be.

Having had to instruct lots of clients on how to use Txp, you simply cannot be too obvious. What is intuitive to us is not necessarily intuitive to someone using a CMS for the first time. Adding a label allows you to direct someone “your article must have a title, placed in the title field,” which is much better than “your article must have a title, placed in the one line field in the center column.”

Seriously, it has bugged me for years. Having all elements labelled except for two is inconsistent UI. IMHO, saving ~40 pixels of vertical screen space has less value than a consistent UI.

Re: four little changes for 4.0.7

Where would you put the “title” description? In front of the input field or above it?

I would put it to above, because the word’s lenght may be longer in some other languages than English. In example otsikko, nazvanie, hyouki, cheng wei and so on. Also the lenght can rise because of different font, increased text size, smaller aspect ratio – and, to add, if there are two words for word “title”, then it would jump oddly.

Also expert field’s label is above, so it is reason too; to keep it similiar.

Re: four little changes for 4.0.7

Looks definitely cleaner than the current tabs.

Above it, just as with all the other fields. Various studies have shown labels above fields provides the most visual coherency, especially in forms with lots of fields.

Re: four little changes for 4.0.7

I like the look of the tabs – would be a nice change (IMO).

The only thing that looks a little weird is the top left corner – the drop shadow seems to be weak there.

Otherwise, I’m all for it.

I agree with all three requests.
IMHO expecially the last two items are little but useful enhancements from an usability point of view (sometimes I added them manually).
BTW I don’t want to bother too much but I made a request towards the same direction (more usability) some time ago. In particular I requested to replace section’s names with section’s titles in the sections popup in the “write” tab.
Jukka has kindly made a plugin for this, but I continue to think this should be the default behaviour cos now it doesn’t look nice (and professional) to have sections show like “my-first-section” instead of “My first section”.
Furthermore this is causing problems with MLP and sections localisation (see here)
Consider also that the categories popup shows correctly titles and not names so at first I thought it was a simple oversight.
Is there a particular reason not to make this change?
