Rolling Zem's Redirect Pro into Core

Back when Alex took his position at Automattic, he mentioned that he’d be working with the dev team to possibly release Redirect Pro and other unfinished plugins. Considering the new “canonical URLs” feature in WP 2.3, I’m wondering if the features of Redirect Pro might make their way into the Txp core soon. If not, what are the chances of the plugin being released to the public?

Re: Rolling Zem's Redirect Pro into Core

interesting that its a new feature in WP now..i wonder if alex had a part in that.

seems like the plugin has been released to the public as i’ve seen threads of people passing it around. if anyone reading this has it, pass it my way :)

Re: Rolling Zem's Redirect Pro into Core

As I understood it, Alex works on wordpress.com, not WordPress itself. It doesn’t look like it’s his stuff.

Alex has sent me a copy of it, and informed me he is fine with either, he’s simply unable to support it. I’m not sure (one way or another) that we want it to become part of the core, but it looks like someone is free to adopt the plugin in any case.

Re: Rolling Zem's Redirect Pro into Core

The redirect to support articles changing sections using /section/title and /section/if/title schemes would be nice to have in core. That’s a pretty useful feature.

Re: Rolling Zem's Redirect Pro into Core

could someone send it to me as well? Or maybe someone should just submit it to textpattern.net since it seems to be freely available if you know where to ask?

Re: Rolling Zem's Redirect Pro into Core

Thanks for clearing up the plugin’s status, Mary. I found a downloadable copy while I was looking for more information on the plugin, but I didn’t feel like it would be right to use it without knowing Alex’s stance on that kind of redistribution. Are there any pending changes in 4.0.6 that might make the current 1.2 version of this plugin stop working?

I agree with Patrick that redirection for duplicate URLs (as with WP canonical URLs) and changed/moved articles would be a great core feature, but anything more ambitious than that is probably best reserved for plugins like gbp_permanent_links.

Alex stance is pretty clear: he released the plugin under GPL license so redistributing it is perfectly legal.

I saw that once I installed the plugin and got a look at the code. Still no docs, but someone familiar with the plugin could take care of that in a “zem_redirect_reborn” release.

Re: Rolling Zem's Redirect Pro into Core

Whatever you do, DO NOT call it zem_redirect_reborn :)
People still don’t know the difference between zem_contact and zem_contact_reborn.

Re: Rolling Zem's Redirect Pro into Core

If there are not going to be any major code changes I wouldn’t bother to rename it at all.
