Re: Most useful plugins?
Maybe someone with more intricite knowledge of the tag should improve the example in TextBook just a bit more since it’s use is not that obvious. Atleast not for me. But who knows, maybe I’m just dumb ;).
No Henrik, you aren’t dumb :) Maybe the if_different is just little confusing, as many users here forums look the tag with their mouth wide open. As meaning even very old users get it quite hard to find what is the meaning of if_different. Maybe the info in Textbook should be improved? Since I don’t know how, what to say or do. Any suggestions or ideas?
Cheers!

Re: Most useful plugins?
So don’t my articles give you an idea of how it works (though they are specific uses) or should I write it up in a different way?

Re: Most useful plugins?
I totally missed your post Stuart since we posted about the same time and after my post I left the thread without re-reading. I’ll read your articles and see if it makes some reason to me.

It seems to me i understood the meaning of if_different. It displays wrapped content if it differes from value in last cycle itteration? I’m right?

@ if_idifferent
Useful discussion on if_different. Perhaps it would be more useful (and easier to find) if it was its own thread? Maybe with some additional examples? (I’m curious to see creative/unusual examples of its use).
@robinna
If we haven’t lost you with our slightly tangential discussion, there are plugins that primarily extend your “design” ability and front side function, and plugins that extend your administrative experience. And some that fall in between. As others said, it depends on what your goals and needs are; especially on the front side of your site. On the Admin side, think what your needs might be and your desired work flow.
- If you need/want to have a contact form on your site, I’ll agree that zem_contact_reborn is excellent.
- If you need excerpts, I’ll second rss_auto_excerpt. You don’t need to write a separate excerpt.
- If you use many of Rob Sable’s plugins, he has a plugin for his plugins. (There is a new version for any plugin author to use being developed. Watch for it).
- If you want a calendar there are couple of approaches, and a couple of plugins.
- You mentioned Photography in another post. There are a variety of gallery plugins depending on preference and need.
If you tell us your goals, we can be more specific.
Good luck with your new site!
Mike

Re: Most useful plugins?
I also think a thread/article/tutorial on creative ways of using if_different would be very useful. I have it working for my archives on one site, and then wrote about the techniques on graphicpush. Maybe some will find it useful. But other than creating archives, I’ve never found another situation that required it. I would love to see how others are applying this enigmatic tag.

Re: Most useful plugins?
What I have done with if_different:
- If same commenter comments twice in row, the following comment will be hide to little bar with Javascript.
- Sortable movie chancing rating’s titles.
- If posting time or author changes in article list, the article will be styled differently.
- Search results seperating Section-title
- Organized portfolio by categories
if_different is the best of the best ;)

Re: Most useful plugins?
great, thanks all.
Basically, my site is a 1 person site with a gallery (also have flickr & youtube), blog, and a few static pages. I like to be able to pull the last image loaded from flickr & my gallery to the blog and static pages; rss last topics to static pages also.
thanks for all of the great help and interesting conversation.

Re: Most useful plugins?
I’ve just noticed there’s a very useful comparison of gallery plugins on Textbook.

Yeah, it’s good, though missing newer ones like wet_for_each_image, aro_slideshow and smd_slimbox among others. Perhaps I ought to get a wiki login…
Mind you, as Gocom says, if_different
can often save the day without any plugins at all. It really is brilliant.
