Most useful plugins?

Hi there,
I’m completely new to textpattern and it seems like there are a ton of plugins. I am wondering if there a suggested list of most useful plugins? Or perhaps a list of most popular ones?
If not, can I throw, this question out here:
Which plugin do you find the most useful and why?

I realize that everyone probably has their own special favorite ;-)
but it might be helpful to me as I figure out which plugins will be useful for me, if I have an idea of which plugins people have found really useful.

thanks,
robin

Re: Most useful plugins?

Haha yeah that list can grow long, it’s more a question of what TXP can’t do for you out of the box. If there is something, well then I’m sure there’s a plugin for it.

Have you visited textpattern.org ? Is there anything specific you’re looking for?

Re: Most useful plugins?

I would say Rob Sable’s plugins are the most useful (for me). rss_auto_excerpt, rss_unlimited_categories and rss_suparchive are probably the plugins I use most.

As variaas say, if you’re looking for something that’s not in core TXP, there is probably a plugin for it on textpattern.org

zem_contact_reborn is vital for contact forms. I almost always use upm_img_popper and upm_image, and various others. Like Amit said, its best to define what you want first.

Re: Most useful plugins?

The first thing I would say and I’ve said it before is, if TXP can do it then don’t use a plug-in just for the sake of it. It is surprising what TXP can do if you just take the time to sit and think about what you want to happen. I don’t have anything against plug-ins by the way. ;)

zem_contact_reborn is probably one of the most widely used in terms of how many sites use it but one that I find very useful is asy_wondertag which allows you to place tags within tags. Doesn’t work in all circumstances but when it does…

However the most powerful plug-in I know is <txp:if_different></txp:if_different>. People don’t seem to be able to get their heads around this tag for some reason but if I were you I would cuddle up to it and make it your best friend. It’s amazing how many plug-ins you don’t need when you can wield this little baby properly. :)

Re: Most useful plugins?

I don’t use a lot of plugins either. They are listed here.

I’d love it if someone would write a series of articles for TXPQ about plugins and what they do, how you use them, why you recommend them etc. The Plugins forums are very busy and I see plugins as the ‘features’ of Textpattern that non-txpeople overlook or don’t know about.

I feel myself silly – i can’t understand how this tag works. What does is compair? I even created topic, but no sense :)

Victor – have a quick read through Simple Archives and Simple Archives 2 to see one or two ways of using it. Once you understand the mechanics you will understand how it can be used for other things.

Re: Most useful plugins?

chh_if_data. Get’s me out of trouble again and again :P.

Regarding if_different, the key text from TextBook would be the:

Textpattern will execute the contained statement when the value of the contained statement differs from the preceding value for the contained statement.

Meaning, if the contents of the if never changes it will only be displayed once. It if changes every minute, it displays it every minute and so on and so forth.

What I don’t get if it’s per user basis or per site basis.

And apologies for the continued hi-jack of the thread.

Re: Most useful plugins?

Henrik: you use the tag inside a form. As you know, the same form is used multiple times in a list (articles, comments, links, etc). The first time the tag is encountered (the first item in the list), its contents are displayed. The next time it is encountered (the following list items), Txp looks to see if the parsed contents of the tag would be any different than the first time. If they are, they are displayed.

Re: Most useful plugins?

I’ll add a double doh for this one. Doh*2! Just leave me here in my sandbox building sand castles, that’s ok by me. :D

Maybe someone with more intricite knowledge of the tag should improve the example in TextBook just a bit more since it’s use is not that obvious. Atleast not for me. But who knows, maybe I’m just dumb ;).

And thanks again Mary for clearing up the confusion!
