Re: Admin Facelift. Take 3

Looks good, I installed the images in a local install and it does make the tabs stand out more.

Thumbs up on the 20% opacity version!

Re: Admin Facelift. Take 3

Why can’t Textpattern have something like this. This is one reason to move to wordpress…

@jimpoep: cool WP theme! Not sure why he called it “tiger” instead of “joyent” though :)

Because Joyent didn’t exist when he made it. If I’m remembering correctly, that admin theme has been around for a long time. Like the Tiger admin theme, Joyent’s interface took a lot of inspiration from the “Tiger” release of Apple’s MacOS X.

As for the trollish “another reason to move to WP”: bullocks. The important things about a web publishing system have little to do with how pretty it is. WordPress is great if all you want is a straight-up weblog (it’s what I use for my own personal blog), but for more complex or diverse sites Txp really shines.

The Txp interface could be prettied up significantly by someone with enough time on their hands, although the table-based layout remains a hindrance to dramatic overhauls. Personally, I think accessibility and usability enhancements would be a more important improvement.

Re: Admin Facelift. Take 3

Personally, I liked Mary’s mockup better (from the old facelift thread (image seems to be MIA)). The grey and yellow don’t exactly match in AceOfDub’s mockup. I don’t want fancy in my admin backend. I want simple, beautiful, and useful.

The current one is OK. Maybe the tabs are a little old, but as for the rest of the layout, it’s absolutely fine the way it is (maybe a few touch-ups).

We should get Jon Hicks and Nathan Smith in this thread ASAP, as they are both professional and well known designers (as well as TXP pros). I want to see what they say about all this.

EDIT:

Just a thought. Of course, I just whipped this up. I think it feels open and un-constricting, while being simple and elegant. I didn’t bother to restyle the forms just yet (because they are almost OK the way they are). Any other thoughts?

Re: Admin Facelift. Take 3

Hi.

I’m a begginer in using TXT and what I’m looking for is a new skin for admin panel.

I read through this whole topic. I have to admit that all work from Ace is amazing however I don’t really know what’s happening now. The first post was a year ago and I was really impressed what I saw on a image of admin panel, however since last year there is no plugin no css.

Is this project still alive and does anyone knows about any other nice skins for admin panel???

Cheers

Re: Admin Facelift. Take 3

Until the dev team puts “admin interface improvements” on the list of priorities we will never see any changes. As of right now I think an admin facelift isn’t even is sight. One of the reasons for this is that it will be a very, very big undertaking. Mainly because there are a lot of plugins out there that tap into the old table based admin layout. If they do away with the tables and tabs then a lot of admin plugins will be broken.

If you wanna make an omelet, you gotta break some eggs. ;)

I agree 100%. The Apple philosophy would apply here very well, “If it’s broken, throw it away and never speak of it again.”

I could definitely live with a few broken plugins for a week or until they get updated. Sadly, I don’t think the dev team thinks an admin facelift is important enough to devote the resources to it. We all want the CMS to get better so it’s good that there is even an active team working on it.

Interesting assumptions, given the freely available past discussions.

Re: Admin Facelift. Take 3

aarplane – I like what you whipped up. I think its crisp and clean. Was that a photoshop example or did you create the actual mark up for it?

re: recent comments – I’m under the impression the development team does care about the admin side, are working at making it more friendly for styling, but need to finish the functionality of the next iteration of Txp before addressing the backend layout and styling. But maybe I’ve got the wrong impression ;P
