Re: Best choice for local server...
WAMP, LAMP or MAMP… depends on your experience with the OS involved. If you’re primarily a Windows user, then you may be better of with WAMP. I can’t believe I just said that… the correct answer is of course LAMP :)

Re: Best choice for local server...
For Windows, Uniform Server is by far the smallest and most portable (no installation). You need to make one edit to the htaccess file to get clean URL’s working though (easier to upload one at the root for multiple installs).

MAMP (although i had to look what acronym meant…)
I couldn’t somehow set it up with base php and stuff on machine… i guess i am command line challenged sometimes, but I found a magical installers that set up everything and got textpattern working locally like a charm !
I think this was the link i used:

Re: Best choice for local server...
For windows the simplest way to get a local server is in my opinion: XAMMP
I’m redesigning my page at the moment, i start at zero and want to finish with a nice AJAX page.
Starting from zero means, starting with the installation of a local server.
Here is a an article about installing XAMPP to use it with textpattern

No pack. Download and install each software on its own. And then, try to mimic your real host configuration.
Package are creating way more problem than they solve.

After trying out all the mentioned packages on my Windows laptop, with XAMPP coming out on top, I have to agree with Jeremie that doing it yourself yields a much better experience.
Both Apache and MySQL have msi installers. For PHP, it’s a few paragraphs of instructions and you’re done. This process teaches you more about how your real hosting environment is setup.

And you will have some basics (like the URL of the documentation) when you come crying on the forums that’s something is supposed to work, and isn’t :)
Seriously, close to half the “bugs” on the TXP French forum (to take one example) are directly related to these so-called “packages”. Ban the packages. Use your professional hosting.
Setting up web software environment is a real job out there.

Agreed. Getting Apache, PHP and MySQL running in Windows is 1 hour of work at most, on the Mac it’s even less.
Plus you’ll actually know where to change things if you have to.
