rename the "textpattern" folder
hi…there are some topics that try to explain how you can rename the “textpattern”-folder (with version 4.0.3). but i have txp 4.0.4 and all my attemps replacing the textpattern-string with the myadmin-string did fail.
maybe someone of this forum can help me out? i hope so….cause it’s christmas time!
cheers

Re: rename the "textpattern" folder
Sorry, I don’t know (maybe Mary will come along and enlighten us?). But following the instructions in the article, I suppose you could search all files in the TXP install for textpattern
, and there where it is part of a filepath, change it to your folder’s new name.
But are you sure you want to do this? You’d have to modify the files every time you upgrade Textpattern.

If this ever gets implemented, it will most likely happen in Crockery, the 4.0 series appears to be feature frozen. I looked at making the changes but that would require the mods be applied at every 4.0.x release. Now if 4.0.5 is the last of the series, then we could mod it and be done with it.

Re: rename the "textpattern" folder
OK, I’ve used a symbolic link to textpattern called “edit” for ages now. just tell other users to go to TLD.com/edit.
works like a charm… or did I miss something?

It’s not likely – it can and will be patched anytime bugs (or god forbid, security vulnerabilities) are found.
It would happen in crockery, if and when it is decided that it will be done at all.
To any passing-by beginners: keep in mind that when you modify core files, you are giving up assistance from the developers when something goes wrong. (If that seems crappy, just think about it: we’ve got no way of knowing what you’ve modified, if you’ve introduced a new bug by the change, etc.)

Re: rename the "textpattern" folder
Any thoughts on using a symbolic link mary? The only reason I do this is that “edit” is esaier for my clients to remember than “textpattern”.

Re: rename the "textpattern" folder
Thoughts? (i.e.: what exactly are you asking?)
Should it work? Yes. Will that break anything? I don’t think so, unless there were a problem with your server. Would I recommend it? Not to a beginner – who wouldn’t even know what that is – but yes, it is better than modifying files, definitely. Just if your Txp admin stops working completely, you would need to start there, with your host, rather than us.

mrdale wondered if there was a good reason that he hadn’t thought of as to why a symbolic link would functionally be a bad idea. And whether it might not be a simpler and more elegant approach than hacking a standard install within an inch of it’s life.

I’ve been following SVN for quite some time now, I actually run a live site off of it and I use it on a daily basis. From 4.0.3 to 4.0.4, a lot changed and it was rather welcome. Bugs were reported, they were fixed in a timely manner and a release finally came out. The road from 4.0.4 to 4.0.5 has been rather confusing since now all focus has apparently shifted to Crockery.

Now this leaves those of us that know that the 4.0.x series is feature frozen and would like to apply our own changes to this branch in a bit of a quandary. Renaming the textpattern folder is something I really want to do for my installs, I was ready to do it after 4.0.4 but SVN keeps changing.
The difference from 4.0 to 4.1 is more than a revision change, it’s a licensing change. With Crockery being in “When it’s ready mode”, where does that leave us that want to add features to the stable branch?
