r1879 - different behaviour

This is a continuation of the problems I was having with feeds. I know it’s a SimplePie issue but the way the new core code handles it is a bit different.

I updated this morning to r1879 and I see some strangeness on my test feeds page. Where in the past it would just ignore the txp tags, it’s seems to be freaking out on them.

Here’s the debug of the first few lines:
<code>
<!— Runtime: 0.0716 —>
<!— Query time: 0.003391 —>

The Textpattern Planet site running 4.0.3, runs fine:
<code>
<!— Runtime: 0.2095 —>
<!— Query time: 0.001993 —>
<!— Queries: 10 —>
<!— Memory: 2631Kb, <txp:feed items=“10” showdate=“l · F j, Y · h:i:s A” showdesc=“false” alttitle=“TextBook – Recent changes” >http://textpattern.net/wiki/index.php?title=Special:Recentchanges&feed=rss</txp:feed> —>
<!— txp tag trace:
</code>

Both sites are in live mode.

Re: r1879 - different behaviour

We’ll need more specific details to understand what’s going on here. What, precisely, is in the feed? What is the plugin output?

Alex, what’s in the feed is in the first debug output.

I saved off the pages from both sites in debugging mode, I could email them to you if you’d like.

Re: r1879 - different behaviour

Debugging mode probably won’t tell us what we need to know: the contents of the feed, what the plugin does with it, what the smallest input is that triggers the problem, and what “freaking out” means.

Re: r1879 - different behaviour

Ok, let’s start with the forum post that caused today’s issues. It contains <code>full path links on <txp:section></code> in the title.

On the Textpattern Planet site, it displayed it as full path links on, dropped off the txp:section from the output. This allowed the rest of the feed items to display from the forum.

On my test site running the soon to be 4.0.4, nothing after that feed title displayed for the feed. It’s like it encountered a strange tag, freaked out and forgot about the rest of the feed items.

Now I know we have to work with the SimplePie developers to escape txp:tags, and I’ve already brought it up with them. I just made this thread because I didn’t understand what the difference was from one revision to the other.

It’s hard to say, since I’m talking about code and XML feeds I’ve never seen, but that doesn’t sound like the right sort of solution. SimplePie’s job is to fetch the content of a feed. You need to process that content appropriately before you include it in the Textpattern page output – either by encoding HTML special characters, stripping tags, or some combination thereof, depending on the result you want.

Dealing with content in RSS feeds is a pain, particularly item titles, because the spec simply doesn’t say what they can or should contain. You need to figure out what the range of possible inputs are, what you want the final HTML output to be in each of those cases, and figure out how to get from A to B.

I just made this thread because I didn’t understand what the difference was from one revision to the other.

You know more about it than we do.

You didn’t say what revision you updated from.
