<code><br /></code> should be used sparingly, but shouldn’t be used outside of a list item, since that’s invalid.
Since when is using <code><br /></code> outside a list item invalid? <code><br /></code> can be used pretty much anywhere you need to insert a hard line break. The errors listed all cascade from the initial <code><ul></code> error.

I meant using <br /> inside a <ul>, but not contained in an <li>.
