Cubeshark.com

Hi Everyone,

I’ve used TXP to build my tiny design site. What do you think?

Re: Cubeshark.com

i generally dislike the mixed use of “we/I” “us/me” etc, it seems that you’re the only person behind cubeshark so why do you pretend to be a studio with multiple employees?

Re: Cubeshark.com

Well, I’m not the only person in Cubeshark… :)

I’ll have to work on the copy. Thanks.

Re: Cubeshark.com

I have to agree that the site is cheerful looking, I like the color scheme and I can read the letters very well.

Have you given thought to changing Permanent link mode to something other than messy?

Yes, I’m not that good in Golf… lol…

But, thanks for all the comments.

For some reason permanent link mode does not resolve properly… I need to speak with my web host about that.

Re: Cubeshark.com

Your html code is awful. For a “Web Design & Development Studio” it’s even pure cruelty.

Or maybe it’s a fake site for a joke I haven’t seen…

Re: Cubeshark.com

Now we’re talking… Thanks for taking a look at the code source. Yeah, it looks bad. There is one thing I am trying to learn in textpattern… that is to increase the size of the coding area, so I can look at the code without all the line breaks.

The reason the code looks like that is to make the coding easier to follow in the coding textarea for the presentation, and not for others eyes to view. Since we’re on the subject, is there a plugin or better yet, where can I edit the code to increase the width of the page presentation?

Again, love the constructive critisizm and more would be helpful :)

Ritchie

Re: Cubeshark.com

Actually, it’s far easier to design your site in a text editor, then copy/paste the code in (TXP tags and all). You could try mcw_templates too.

As far as the actual source, not the formatting, goes, I think it could be improved in a few ways:

  • Fix errors
    • Textpattern sends out header('content-type:text/html;charset=utf-8); in index.php, so you don’t need a content encoding meta tag, especially one that isn’t unicode.
    • Image maps are outdated – CSS Sprites
    • <br /> should be used sparingly, but shouldn’t be used outside of a list item, since that’s invalid.
  • Replace the presentation images (logo type, headers) with background images
  • You can remove the “commenting closed” on portfolio pages by setting “auto-append comments” in the admin tab to “no”. Then, on the blog/news article form, use <txp:if_section name="blog,news"><txp:output_form form="comments_display" /></txp:if_section>

On a non-geeky front, it’d be nice to see some thumbnails or maybe a project image on your homepage that links to the case study or the project.

  • The email icon doesn’t fit in, in my opinion. The dark yellow/orange doesn’t look right (great reasoning!). I think it’d look good in your logo’s light blue. Perhaps a rollover to white or something.
  • This is terribly nit-picky, but I really think “How Do I Connect…” should be moved up about 3-5px, so the bottom of the question mark is aligned with the asterisk and the start of the white, shadowed arrow.
  • This is more personal preference (and should be ignored!), but I think you could turn the drop shadows on the homepage image down 10-20%, so they’re more subtle.
  • I really like you’re logo—you need to flaunt it! Make it larger!
  • Great whitespace on the individual pages.

Sorry about the abuse of lists and English (it’s late)!

Re: Cubeshark.com

Jm,

Thanks for the review. Much appreciated.

I am still learning the inner workings of Textpattern. One of the issues you brought up was the break tag. Those tags are inserted automatically when I create the list items in the content article section. I am not to sure how to remove that. Any help there would be great!

As for the comment display form, I have to figure out how to show only “Comments (2) Leave comment” on the news, blog list, and how then to allow for the comments display form to show when they actually click on that specific item.

For the site aesthetics, i’ll have to go back to the drawing board with the color combinations. I am working with a 5 color scheme, and don’t want to be too monochromatic, which is why I am using the greens and yellows as secondary colors to the 3 blue hues.

As for the logo, wanted to keep it simple so that it can be drawn by hand on a piece of paper by anyone who viewed it. So, thanks for the words of confidence.

Again, thanks again :)
