Re: Something causes IE to shut down, but what?
To find the culprit I used the most technical and thorough problem-solving methods devised by human-beings:
Trial and error (let’s just say I saw that cursed crash screen more times than I cared to).
I started by copy/pasting the footer into a separate document, then worked from there. I ended up copying everything except the <br /> and I found that it worked, so I started over by copying the entire (original) source, removed the <br /> and, heavens above, it worked.
Why? I have a feeling that’s something us mere mortals were not meant to know. :)
Oh, and I’m glad it worked. I like proof that I’m not going crazy, and this bug was doing it’s best to put me in a straight-jacket.

Thanks for explaining, I should have done that myself of course :/ And again thank you very much for going through all this :)

Re: Something causes IE to shut down, but what?
I usually start by looking at the scripting. I put the <code><br /></code> back in a lcoal coppy and it worked fine on IE – with javascript disabled! This would indicate to me the problem is in one of the scripts. The page does try to load an inordinate amount of cookies via images.

Re: Something causes IE to shut down, but what?
If it was the script, then wouldn’t it crash with or without the <br /> (of course, this is web-development…logic does not always apply)? Besides, removing the scripts was the first thing I did, and IE6 still crashed. Maybe I missed something somewhere, I don’t know.
For some reason, that document, displayed in IE6, did not like the existance of a <br /> at that certain location. Move the <br /> beyond the lines 346 – 355 (around there, if I recall), and IE doesn’t crash. For giggles I changed the <br /> to a <hr /> and IE behaved itself. You should’ve seen the dirty looks I was giving my monitor.
This seems more like a case of a combination of elements thrown together that just did bad things in IE6. Els was just (un)lucky enough to hit them all at once.

NyteOwl, can you please explain this to me? I have both a Statcounter script (that has been there for ages) and Google Analytics (recently added). Is having two of these bad in some way or another?

I didn’t go through the scripts but as I said, with the <code><br /></code> in place and javascript disabled it displayed fine in IE here (unless you changed soemthing else on the page before I happened to view it).

No, I didn’t. And even if I take out all javascripts and leave the <br /> IE still crashes (to be honest, I can’t even find how to disable javascript in IE, yes I know, that’s dumb…)

I had the same happen to me when I took out the scripts.
To disable javascript in IE go to Tools > Internet Options > Security Tab, then select the Custom Level button, scroll to the Script section and disable Active Scripting. I usually disable everything (javascript, ActiveX, etc.) to test how the pages look without it.

Re: Something causes IE to shut down, but what?
Thanks :) If I disable active scripting and also everything under ActiveX, it still crashes with the <br /> left in.
