Re: New Forum structure

Elenita, I just think the “precedent” argument is flawed at best.

No, it’s not, it’s valid – on top of that she’s been friendly and suggested alternatives.
Please leave your aggresions at home and get off her back. Maybe mary’s reaction may be ambigous and open for interpretation in a different way, if you had a bad day. But your reactions were very clearly and non-ambiguously out of place. Few people are satisfied with that attitude, me included.

I find it amazing that – in this thread of all, where mary has been exceptionally responsive to user suggestions – some people have the nerve for attacking her for not doing enough. If anybody has the need to keep this off-topic-discussion going, be so kind and take it to email.

Re: New Forum structure

Although it seems like years, it wasn’t that long ago that Dean asked me to be the Forum’s CSS manager. He asked me via email, so you would have to take my word for it. That all came about because I started that thread to get the flailing forum back on track, and we went from the blue oxygen back to the old, original yellow, with a few enhancements. Dean gave praise for my efforts and then promptly made a few more changes of his own to the colors and such to more or less what you see today (keeping a few of mine and phiw13’s enhancements).

Until just a few days ago, there hasn’t been need for much CSS change, outside of what a person wanted to do in their own browser style sheets. Off the top of my head, david_1cog, I don’t know if IE supports user defined style sheets or not, but that seems like the win-win here, no? Tell me again why you use IE, I forget. I’m sure not many people here use IE, and for the majority of users who have a Web browser with a minimum of brains (as phiw13 aptly puts it), user-defined stylesheets would be the easy solution for people who “prefer smaller font sizes and less black”, for example.

<strong>@alexandra:</strong> Who’s in charge here, you or Mary? (Stop undermining the admin, please.)
<strong>@Mary:</strong> I’m sure david_1cog appreciates all your efforts as much as the rest of us.
<strong>@david_1cog:</strong> For God’s sake, man, we just got her back, don’t go scaring her off again or the village will do you like they did William Wallace.

Seriously, when the Forum Admin makes an executive decision after you have made your case — respect it, live with it, like we all do. Forum Admin and community ambassador is a thankless enough job as it is, we (the community) don’t need to be burdoning the good intentions and effort.

P.S. I don’t consider myself Forum CSS manager any longer. I gladly leave that in the Admin’s hands.

Re: New Forum structure

I wanted to keep the door open for an agreement between mary and david. I understand both parts very well. Why can both not work together or at least talk about?
mary shut David up – something she once complained about heavily to me (she was perfectly right that time) that can happen to everybody. The important think is to keep the door open to talk about.
Last but not least, an admin is no holy, perfect person, destry. noone is.
off and out now :)

Re: New Forum structure

or at least talk about?

They already did. The one who’s doing the work, gets to make the calls. I think we agreed in another topic that nobody makes decisions about other people’s work. The same goes here. Attacking, bullying or being pushy to coerce someone into doing what you want is not tolerated here.

I am closing this topic, so people can get their issues sorted out via email, if necessary.

Hopefully we can go back to talking about the actual topic tomorrow.

Re: New Forum structure

I’ve added a top_nav to TextGarden. Hope it looks OK for everyone.

Re: New Forum structure

Stuart,

That looks good, fits in well.

I believe it will bring more traffic to each of the sites, time will tell.

Re: New Forum structure

OK, I’m convinced. I’ve added the navbar across the top of TextBook. David_1cog is working on refining the stylesheets a bit, so if it looks wonky let us know. The CSS behind MediaWiki is anything but nice and easy to work with.

Re: New Forum structure

Destry,

Looks fine in Firefox 1.5.0.1, IE 6.0.security.flavor.of.the.month and Opera 8.52.

Just one question, is the nick name for Textpattern, TXP or TxP?

Re: New Forum structure

I’ve always used TXP. To me TxP would suggest TextPattern and strictly speaking I suppose it should really be Txp. Doh!

@Destry – looks fine to me in FF1.5.0.1 and IE6 on Win but you should replace the link to TextBook with one to TextGarden.

TXP or Txp is fine. For the magazine it is all-caps, as that’s part of its name: TXP Magazine.

Stuart, at 800px the nav list wraps down a line but unlike the forums nav menu Textgarden’s intrudes into the title banner space.

Re: New Forum structure

I am aware of that. I’m just wondering how long we will have to cater for 800px. I didn’t want to make the nav too deep else it looks “top-heavy” and I don’t think it looks too bad with FF. IE does push the image down a little but HELL – IE and 800px. I’m leaving home. ;)

But I have an idea…

How’s that then?
