Re: Are you back, Mary?
Everytime I read this forum I see people posting I don’t recognize. I don’t think things are slowing down here in the least.

I think there is nothing bad about going slow… this is not a fast food… this is good food delivered fast (i took that from a restaurante website but I cant remember which one)!

I am not talking number of post, number of new users (though as on any forums a lot of zero post users…). The slow thing was rather akin to dropping from warp to impulse (trekkies will follow me there…).

Never meant to say the community is not vital, it is and it is still as talented as it was… what we lack is direction and vision. Where are we going ? I loved when Zem posted about Textpattern Elements, at least I started to think something was in the hopper… since then… ?
Some veterans here (Alex, Nils and me) have summed it up here and did a collective post : How to bring txp back on track ? Let’s debate !
Maybe that’ll explain things a little…

Re: Are you back, Mary?
Isn’t it like Dean’s direction is missing? Him not originally being a programmer but a bookdesigner is what, imo, has made TXP such a great, creative, versatile tool. He did like a “blogging / cms reinvented” kinda thing – and did it well. Except for the sometimes ultraslow development back in the days when he was the only one developing on TXP core.
Then, he finally sorted out various roles, for Sencer, Kusor, and Zem – and then, since then, he more or less left the party?
So, now we have great programmers, with vision yes, but not (imo) real VISION.
Good development is like a synergetic process. We need both vision and manpower.

Re: Are you back, Mary?
That’s the subject of this thread.

Re: Are you back, Mary?
Yeah I read that one. But I read it the minute after I posted the above. But anyway, that proves general consensus in the community, about what’s “problematic” on the issue of Textpattern’s future development. Provided there really IS a problem… I’m not sure, as Dean was needed in Textpattern’s childhood. He was the daddy. Now, Textpattern is a grown up late-teen, wanting to go lots of places, and being a bit confused. That said, I think people have become too attached to the idea of NEW NEW NEW. That is, new updates, new features, lalala. Textpattern does what it should do pretty well. Of course certain things are still musthave-features to come, but generally Textpattern is stable, wonderful, flexible.
I think I’ll paste that comment in the other thread as well.

Re: Are you back, Mary?
Well, as of this moment, there is a total of 40 people that have posted there. Of that number, some commented that they weren’t commenting on it, some had off-topic comments/replies (including my sole post), some saw/see a problem, and some did not. Of the number that posted, saying they see/detect (a) problem(s), not all agree(d) on the problem(s), cause(s), or solution(s). So, I don’t know whether it equates to consensus of the community or not… we are unamiously ambiguous. ;p

Re: Are you back, Mary?
Njaah, mhh… I’d say … There is, among some… a consensus that direction is needed. But, I myself… is not really sure… whether or not it’s that much of a problem – an open source project is quite an organic process. Let it grow, let’s see what exciting mutant comes out of it;-)
The range of choices are so vast when it comes to open source CMS’s – there are so many. Some like this, some like that – Textpattern be Textpattern and take on its natural evolution…
Zem is right when he says development of Textpattern is driven by supply, not demand. A bit cynical, but nevertheless right on target and true.
All that said, I wish Dean was still in charge of the development and direction of Textpattern. He alone had a vision he carried out. A vision of something different – a publishing tool that people like me, and plenty others needed.
But people can’t be forced. Passion should be the key. Like you, back on topic; I think it was totally acceptable you left the forums because you felt that was the thing to do. Your choice. Now you feel differently, you’re back – that makes sense. Passion.
