Are you installing the entire set of files that you downloaded, or just the textpattern directory?

Is Textpattern installed in a directory called ‘textpattern’? That’s a sure way to cause a lot of confusion, because then you’ve got /textpattern/, which is the public side, and /textpattern/textpattern/, which is the admin side.
As a side note, a lot of people seem to do this when setting up TXP for testing. Perhaps there should be a warning in the docs about the confusion which will follow if you put TXP in a directory called ‘textpattern’.
