not the parrot sketch – Flash dead on Dec 31.

PSA if someone still needs it…

Since Adobe will no longer be supporting Flash Player after December 31, 2020 and Adobe will block Flash content from running in Flash Player beginning January 12, 2021, Adobe strongly recommends all users immediately uninstall Flash Player to help protect their systems. — source

Most browser are fully removing support (Safari 14 since Sept 2020, Firefox in Jan. 2021, Chrome at the same date?), some already made it difficult to play Flash content (Safari 12 and 13, Firefox I think, Edge 18).

I remember removing that plugin from my systems 10 years ago, in Feb 2010.

PS — Textpattern related: if you ever upload .swf content to your TXP powered site (via the Images tab), you may want consider purging it and remove it from the filesystem.

That is indeed great news, which I have been following. I’m just sorry that much of the net.art from the 90’s and 00’s will no longer be accessible except via Rhizome’s oldweb.today and similar other efforts.

Interestingly, old swf files can still be played using the Javascript Flash Player emulator Ruffle.

Ah, no more rathergood and b3ta stuff then. Badger Badger Badger and Buffy’s Swearing Keyboard, among many others.

From Txp’s perspective, we deprecated .swf support in Content>Images from 4.7.0 and will be removing support entirely in the next version.

Ok. So glad to finally hear of flashes demise. Any tips on how e can delete it from all our system … plugins apps extensions etc… i.e, purge it forever to never to see it hanging about my computer again?

I don’t remember the exact date but I started forcibly disabling it in every browser I used at more or less that time. I got so sick of the crashes – no matter which browser and OS.

Bici, the linked page in my OP has a FAQ that answers that kind of things.

Oh, yes… For the archivists around, there appear to be quite a few options to view older SWF files. Yiannis also linked to an option.

Good riddance. I’ve never liked Flash and won’t morn its passing. I’m glad that Ruffle exists for archival purposes thought.
