What do you give to clients as a learning manual?

Group:

I know this is the title of an old post — and I also know that floating around the web is an old manual from 2006 — but I am curious what people are giving their end user (client) once they have designed the site and “turned it over.”

Re: What do you give to clients as a learning manual?

As you know the old post you will have seen my pdf approach that can be printed out and is available online but you might not know the pic over in a German thread. It is a bit of work, but I think the extra effort is worth it. The recipient invariably appreciates it – like a nicely wrapped present – and it gives them a sense of empowerment.

Of course, it depends on the complexity and the client. If the user already has a good grasp of txp or is generally computer-savvy, that’s not always necessary. If the site isn’t complicated and you pare down the admin area you might get away with a combination of adi_notes for key infos and bot_admin_tooltips as a “what’s this?” reminder.

My german is very rusty :) But I really like the pic —- I agree with you regarding a nicely wrapped present — just trying to become more efficient when it comes time to turn over —

I downloaded the free version of Jing and started making 5min videos – then uploading to the free 2gig you get on Screencast and giving access to the client.

So far, its saved me soo much tech support time, its really worth the initial effort.

I chose this method because generally none of my write tabs on each site are the same.

Not that I have clients as such but when i put together sites for friends I use adi_notes to give instructions on a per tab basis.

In my case i wrote a little tutoriel (10 pages with screenshots) that give an overview about textpattern and explain each task with screenshots.

The websites are mainly business and have simple tasks to manage.

I’m using a free screen recorder name BB FlashBack Express
Upload the videos to Facebook / Youtube and set them to be private, then if you want you can embed the videos in a tab using smd_tabber

Re: What do you give to clients as a learning manual?

i’m using google sites included in my google apps account for a wiki-style manual which may also include screencasts etc. usually i start to make the manual while the client’s site is still under construction: whenever i come across a step that might be of interest for my client (e.g. how to add a class to a link with textile) i write the solution down in google sites. thus, when the site is ready for golive the manual is as well.
