What do you give to clients as a learning manual?

Is there an electronic downloadable guide that one can give to clients as an aid as they learn TXP ?

Re: What do you give to clients as a learning manual?

Usually the sites I make don’t follow the same pattern so a ‘one guide fits all’ solution rarely works. Also clients aren’t always so tech-savvy that they can relate a more generic description to their precise needs. I’ve found it saves time later on when I describe what to do in terms of the client’s own tasks, e.g. “add a new project”, “enter a new term” etc., rather than how txp works. The clients know exactly where to look.

I make a PDF manual with the most essential client tasks that walks them through their tasks step by step. There’s roughly a task per page with one big annotated screenshot plus a short description of the steps. The first time it takes a while to make, after that you find you can re-use sections for each site and it gets quicker each time. I also make them a page with their passwords, hosting numbers etc. so that they have it all in one place.

Another approach is to create a /help section in textpattern which people can look up when they need it. If you use asy_dashboard you can provide a link to it directly from the txp admin area.

That said there is a guide for end users available from txphelper.com (9$) and an online manual of sorts that can be incrementally expanded.
Both are good in their own ways, but contain more or other information than most of my clients would be looking for, e.g. I don’t want them fiddling with installation stuff, and most will be phased by HTML code in instructions or a choice of different ways of entering images.

I also give each client a customized PDF file. I have seen other designers create HTML files (not driven from Textpattern, in case TXP breaks), but I find those more tedious to edit.

I make short, task specific, screencasts and make them available at a url on the client site. I’ve also used logmein.com (free) to do demonstrations.
