Book "Textpattern Solutions" Still relevant or too outdated?
Hi,
I got the book “Textpattern Solutions” awhile ago and, as I got sidetracked with work, I am just getting around to working with it now. I see that the version number in the book is 4.0.4, and the current version number is 4.2.0. Is the book still relevant?
If so, I’m sure there is some out of date info that I should watch out for. Please let me know the information that is out of date.
Please also let me know if all/most of the book is out-of-date and therefore unusable.

I don’t think there’s any book that’s up-to-date with 4.2. From what I’ve seen most of what is in there is still very relevant.

While it is definitely due for an update with new information to cover things like txp:variable and many other additions / changes, as Marty said, the existing book is still relevant and not “outdated”.

Has one of the authors of the book switched from Textpattern to Drupal for personal use?

Yes you are right – Nathan Smith’s website Son Spring is now drupal powered.
It would be very interesting to know why he used Drupal for personal use.

Thank you everyone for replying! Glad to hear the book is still relevant. I’ve downloaded all of the Changelogs since 4.0.4 as well as the tag reference to get a better handle on what has changed.

The general concepts described in the book are still valid and I think it’s a very solid introduction to Textpattern.
One of the most significant changes was the new tag parser introduced in 4.0.7.
It allows for nesting of identical tags and the use of Textpattern tags as attributes. You can find the documentation on Textbook.
Also txptips.com has grown into an excellent resource for anything from basic to highly advanced tutorials.
