[request] Searching for files

Is it possible to include files in the site search (searching on description) or failing that to have a separate file search?

Doug.

Re: [request] Searching for files

You’d need a plugin to do that.

Does a plug in exist?

Re: [request] Searching for files

If it does exist, it’s not listed at textpattern.org (or I just didn’t see it). Shouldn’t be very hard to write one, I think.

No, there isn’t one to my knowledge either.

Moving thread to Plugin Requests…

Re: [request] Searching for files

Time to look into how to write plug-ins I guess!

The reason for the request is that there is a danger that there is a desire to use the site I’ve created as a mini file repository – especially pdf versions of some of the articles…

Damn those “customers” with their strange ideas!

Thanks for moving the thread.

Re: [request] Searching for files

Perhaps it would be even nicer if upon upload of the PDF you’d use some kind of PDF-2-text tool to extract the textual contents of the PDF and insert that in the description field. That way they can search on the full contents of the PDF, without a need to type in a description during upload.

Hmm… it’s probably best not to let your customers read this thread, as they might get even stranger ideas ;)

Re: [request] Searching for files

Ok, you could get me into real trouble with suggestions like that! ;-)

I’m already fighting a battle to convince them to “keep things simple”… but they seem insistant that they need to make things as complicated and un-intuitive as possible! sigh

Are there any recommended resources to help get started with plug-ins?

See the ‘important’ topics at the top of the Plugins subforum.

Re: [request] Searching for files

douglgm started this thread as: (highlighting is mine)

Doug.

If I understand correctly you want to be able to include a search box for non-registered users that does more or less the same than the search box in the files tab of the admin side. Is it so?
