Textpattern as a password protected community site?

I’m planning the redesign of a charity site for a client where the needs are:

  • Some areas of the site are closed to general public
  • To get access to those areas, users must register, and pay a donation (presumably this could be handled by paypal?)
  • An admin then approves that registration
  • User gets email with login details, and links to goodies
  • User gets access to all of the site, including a forum (using the same login details, so if they’re signed in, they don’t have to sign in to the forum again)

I’ve used Textpattern to power a lot of things, but these areas are new to me, and while I know CMS’s like Expression Engine can do this, I’d rather use Textpattern if there’s a way. I’m aware of the self-register plugin, but can it do this? I don’t want users to gain access to the Texpattern admin area though, just to areas of the site.

Any pointers much appreciated!

Cheers,

You might consider placing a plugin pledge for this at this thread down to the end, I think colak is requesting the same thing.

regards, marios

Hi marios… not what I had in mind but I guess that might be part of what jon is asking

Re: Textpattern as a password protected community site?

Hi Jon.

You might try something more like this:
http://textpattern.org/plugins/440/ignpasswordprotect

Tons of nice options for user-facing login stuff.
As for registration….that’s a toughie. ign_password_protect draws from the current user doc. Perhaps you could edit it to create a new type of user that has no rights on the back-end but can login in using ign. THen you could use mem_self_register and make it create users of that new type.

Some things would def. need to be tweaked in each, but it’s doable.

@ Walker: Excellent – I had though I’d read about both plugins properly, but it seems not! The combination looks good, I’ll give that a go on a test install. Thanks!

@ Colak – does ign_password_protect do what you were looking for?

Re: Textpattern as a password protected community site?

Hi Jon,

not really. I’m not having a members site. instead, neme.org is expanding its authors and some of them do not really feel that comfortable with non WYSIWYG interfaces so what I was looking for is some plugin which I could enclose texts within its tags to explain to those authors which field appears where in the backend and what they have to be doing to post to the site. ign_password_protect though does look interesting regarding another project which we will be launching in neme.

The other way it could be done is by using a forum’s permissions.

Using Shaliza’s suggestion, this is what a user implemented using the PunBB forum.

Whatever forum you decide to use, I would let the forum handle the user registration and authorization to the sections of your site.

Yep, exactly. I think that’s the best way to do it.

Re: Textpattern as a password protected community site?

Recently i checked out some other CMS. One which is OS and has a better permission & rights management than TXP has, is Serendipity. I posted Jon´s request on the s9y forum as i´m looking for such a community solution myself for long already but like to avoid too much (txp) hackin and modifiying plugins.

Re: Textpattern as a password protected community site?

sounds like skeely found a solution of sorts using paypal and htaccess protected directories in this thread (also parts thereof here).
