Advanced Options toggle issues

Hi there,

Advanced Options stopped toggling all of a sudden. All websites running on 4.0.3 seem to be affected. I have another one running on 4.0.2 and that is working fine. Javascript console keeps saying Object (result of expression toggleDisplay) does not allow calls (line 40). Any ideas?

Cheers, Gerhard.

Hi Gerhard,

No problems here with Safari or Firefox in MacOs X. What browser/operating system are you using?

All the Best,

Re: Advanced Options toggle issues

All browsers (Safari, Camino, Firefox etc.) experience the same problem (tested on OS X only). The thing is that websites are hosted on 2 different servers, so I very much doubt it’s something to do with them (one is managed by me and another one is belonging to one of my clients). Nothing changed on mine that would break things.

Another thing that I noticed in Safari’s Activity Viewer: .../textpattern/textpattern.js (lost network connection). What is this all about?

Gerhard,

What Safari’s Activity Viewer is trying to say is:
“I can’t do the javascript stuff because the textpattern.js file isn’t fully loaded”.

Perhaps a momentary network connection problem is the cause.
Empty the cache of the browsers, then try reloading the page…

All the Best,

Re: Advanced Options toggle issues

I have to say that I’ve experiencing this on an intermittent basis lately – all with 4.0.3 installs, but in FireFox on PC’s.

On one site, the only way I could get it working again was to refresh the TXP install by uploading all the files again. But I admit, I didn’t do a lot of troubleshooting on it because I just had to get it working again quickly.

Re: Advanced Options toggle issues

Could be a problem with a cache, proxy, firewall, virus/malware scanner, etc; or a server issue.

Textpattern doesn’t (and can’t) write to its own files, so there’s nothing it could do to damage them.

Best thing you can do is, without changing anything else, see if you can reproduce the problem on a different PC. If it works fine, the problem is the PC.

Re: Advanced Options toggle issues

Fully accept that it’s not a TXP issue per se, Alex.
It was present on multiple PC’s here, so as you say, was probably a server/cache/whatever problem.

I thought it was worth posting to mention that it wasn’t just a Max OSX issue.

Cheers

Thanks. One possibility to consider is Zonealarm, and other similar applications. I’ve seen some reports that it modifies the contents of HTML pages on-the-fly, inserting and modifying Javascript code.

Re: Advanced Options toggle issues

Hadn’t thought about a firewall… Not the issue here though, because I don’t have any software FW’s running.

Re: Advanced Options toggle issues

Thanks for your contribution Neil, Zem and Rui.

Well, something had to happen to that js file because the version I have locally is working fine… Oh, and btw, tried updating off SVN and it keeps saying Could not download "textpattern.js" Could not read status line: Connection reset by peer. What is going on with this js file? Every other file got updated/downloaded successfully.

Will play a bit and let you know my findings.

Re: Advanced Options toggle issues

I found a very good explanation of the error, gave me a good giggle:

“Connection reset by peer” is the TCP/IP equivalent of slamming the phone back on the hook. It’s more polite than merely not replying, leaving one hanging.

In other words: “I’m not talking to you. Hmph!” ;)

Neil (when it happens) and Gerhard: you haven’t said, is that all while accessing from your own computer?

Are you using a wireless internet connection? Have you tried using a free proxy?

Re: Advanced Options toggle issues

Hi Mary,

yes, I am connecting wirelessly, and yes, the problem occurs when accessing the websites from my computer.

This problem seems to appear when the code for the toggle function is stored in a flat file as opposed to the db. Version 4.0.2 had the js in the db and it’s working fine. Weird stuff…

I am not going through any proxies, no. It’s a straight computer > router > isp > net (no modem). Had SPI firewall running. Thought that might have interfered with it. Disabled the firewall but the problem persists.
