As far as I know it’s not possible to search in one category. You can search in one section, though I don’t assume that you’ll want to restructure your site for that.

Actually, I believe you might be able to (I haven’t tried it yet, myself). Have you tried passing the category? i.e: create your own search form, and customize it:

<input type="radio" name="c" value="english" checked="checked" /> English
<input type="radio" name="c" value="french" /> French

That would pass the chosen category along to the search, so try it out and see if it gets acknowledged.
