Archive by Date

This seems dreadfully simple, so I apologize in advance if I’m overlooking something.

All I want is to create an archive that allows me to link to particular dates of posts. I don’t want to list all the titles on the archive page itself (which article_custom would do easily), but just the dates themselves, linking to a list of entries happening on those particular dates. It would look, for example, like this:

2006: Jan Feb
2005: Feb Jun Nov Dec

Each link would lead to a URL, like example.com/archive/2006/01, that would display the entries from that particular month. Also, though I’m not sure I would link to it from the archive, it would be nice if the user could access individual sections the same way, like example.com/articles/2006/01 or example.com/books/2006/01, that would display only that particular section rather than all entries.

Am I making sense? Is there some way to make this happen?
