Admin. Facelift, take 2
I had promised it in some other threads. Here is a first step to a revamped Txp admin pages. This is only a small part of all the work Mary had done: it only changes the code used for the tabs navigation, and moves the log-out link to the top of the page.
Readme file included, and don’t forget to make a backup :-)

Since you are taking over. Can you re-define the “facelift” ? Is it cosmetic, does it touch code markup and semantic (table-layout, eurk), organization&UI global layout ?

This part is global, and as said only affect the head of the interface: the tabs and the header bar.
Changes in the (html) code form nested tables tag soup to lists for the tabs. The headerbar is a div.

Cool. What’s the next step ? Get a community consensus and a diff patch submission to the gang of four ?

Sencer has mentioned that something like this will not go into 4.0.x since they are focusing on bug fixes primarily right now, and this could create major incompatabilities with plugins etc. So it would have to go into crockery.

Well, this would probably (or there was some major hicops when releasing 4.0 without fixing it) won’t affect plugins.
But even if it’s for crockery, or the next one, that’s fine. It’s not that important (compared in my opinion to others things like nested sections, or user-friendly ressources insertion in articles).
I just wanted to know what was the goal of all of this. It’s an old subject for TXP, and past experiences on that domain didn’t achieve anything. I wanted to know the level of ambition of it, before joining in :)

To be fair, admin plugins are very tied to the current structure of the admin pages, because the pages lack adequate hooks for manipulating the DOM. Simple things like the drop down at the top of the interface broke a few plugins when that got added.
The impression I got was that a major admin interface overhaul better belongs in a major release.

Well, with nested sections and several others things on crockery, my uneducated guess is that 4.1 is crockery.

I think you are right. I guess what I was trying to say is if a patch is to be submitted or anything like that I think it would have to be against the crockery code base to have any chance of inclusion.

(Your read me file had me looking at the calendar. How did you get to January 27, 2006 before everyone else. Are you hiding a time machine in your basement?)

I really love the design of Mary. I hope the admin-layout is going to change like this soon. Philippe, didn’t tried your style, but I also love your design. Thanks for your work.

I like your design, Philippe, although I prefer Mary’s use of “Textpattern orange” at the top.
Any idea when we could see the whole admin interface reworked in clean, table-free code? I’m looking forward to the day when plugins can alter the contents of admin tabs by performing DOM manipulations.

finally got around to installing this. huge difference, i also hope it can be incorporated into txp soon.
my only problem is that the top tabs (content/presentation/admin) seem to be hardcoded, or at least are not language aware, even though the subtabs are language aware. is there a quick fix for this?
