Re: 10 css tricks

Couple of problematic tips. If SEO is important to the site, Google is becoming increasingly against text positioned outide the user “viewport” (ie text-indent: -2000px). IE hacks are … well hacks.

BTW, the Neme site needs a default background for the main section of the site. It suffers from assumedus backus whiteitis :)

Re: 10 css tricks

Do you have any pointer to the information that Google is not encouraging text outside the viewport?

The main issue with that is that most screen readers still interpret display:none rules in screen style sheets even though they shouldn’t, so the outide the viewport positioning is a nice way to keep the page accessible and do some image replacement.

I can see how this could be abused though. The same way that meta keywords were abused in the 90’s.

Re: 10 css tricks

Image-replacement tricks using negative text-indent have been in wide use for quite a while, and I’ve yet to see anyone incur a penalty in Google for it. I’d imagine that it would be too hard to progammatically identify the use of image-replacement, since it almost invariably takes place inside a narrow spectrum of HTML elements and tends to contain a different sort of text — SEO spammers will stuff dozens or hundreds of keywords, for example, and it’s pretty easy to pick up on that.
