Will not install

I have web server and mysql installed. Created new database for textpattern. Coppied files over and when i go to install it does not install. Error it gives is;

Can’t connect to database

Installed mysql 5.0 and thought maybe textpattern didnt support newest verion and downgraded to 4.1. Issue still wasnt resolved. I reinstalled everything and went back to 5.0 and i still have same issue…

What posible reason could i bet getting this issue? Please help me troubleshoot this issue.

My previous attempt was on a windows server. I switched to FC4 and it still wont install. It gives me the error;

Fatal error: Call to undefined function mysql_connect() in /var/www/html/cms/textpattern/setup/index.php on line 188

please help
