new installation yeilds 404 errors on VIEW SITE

installation of 4.0.3 seemed to go flawlessly.

LOGIN, SITE PREFERENCES & DIAGNOSTICS screens all came up just as the ‘Detailed Installation Instructions” said they would

But when i click the VIEW SITE tab to see the default article/post, i get a 404.

Trolled the forum, but cannot locate a topic that’ll allow me to solve this solo.
Any thoughts/assistance?

that link was what i needed. thanks.
seeing a vast cross section of other .htacess contents allowed me to bang on a few attempts, finally with SUCCESS.

i un-commented : – DirectoryIndex index.php index.html – Options +FollowSymLinks

and specified a subdirectory in: – RewriteBase /spew/
