ThanksSencer!!Anyone tried TXP w/ IIS & 2003 Server, preexisting ASP

I would like to thank Sencer for his prompt reply to my query last week regarding TXP on a 2003 Server box. He suggested XAMPP. This brings up one more question and I know that IIS is not officially supported by TXP…However, I have to make things happen with what I have been given at work. Currently, I have a 2003 Server with IIS and it is running our collections database which was written in ASP. Has anyone run Apache calling PHP concurrently with IIS calling ASP on the same server? I have found some stuff about it working with there being a need to tweak the port settings, etc…Would it be easier to use IIS with TXP/MySQL/PHP? Finally, is there a good resource for this type of thing?

Thanks So Much

Re: ThanksSencer!!Anyone tried TXP w/ IIS & 2003 Server, preexisting ASP

Okay, I have been doing some research and am pondering the wisdom of just converting the asp to php. Has anyone done this? I see something called “ASPtoPHP” and some others that seem to do the conversions automatically, which would be ideal as I have over 20000 objects and 60000 images in the collections database I am ultimately responsible for. I find TXP impressive enough to make such conversions. Plus, the collections management program that we purchased in 1999 is such a dinosaur now. I see no reason to continue paying them when I know more than their support people…which is sad…

Re: ThanksSencer!!Anyone tried TXP w/ IIS & 2003 Server, preexisting ASP

I know I’ve encountered a user (jdueck?) on this forum who has successfully implemented Textpattern with IIS, but one would have to do some searching to find the posts. Myself, I tried it once and out of tears and frustration decided that it was much easier — and except for the hardware it is free — to get a Linux box up and running with Textpattern/MySQL.

You can run IIS and Apache on the same server, but you have to change the default port (80) on one or the other. I wouldn’t advise this, however.

If your hands are tied with the Windows box, I would suggest running PHP with IIS (you can run ASP and PHP concurrently with IIS) and then do a search on this forum about getting Textpattern to play nicely with IIS. The only real issue it has is with URL rewriting (IIS doesn’t use .htaccess).

As far as the ASP code is concerned, I would slowly start converting the code manually to PHP since you should only be dealing with some relatively basic DB connections and SELECT, INSERT and UPDATE code (the SQL statements should already be there for you in the ASP unless it was setup with stored procs on SQL Server or something like that), but I say this not knowing what kind of collections app you have.

I would be wary of ASPtoPHP, but anyone else can chime in who might have experience with it.

Matt

Re: ThanksSencer!!Anyone tried TXP w/ IIS & 2003 Server, preexisting ASP

Thanks. I am picking up stuff from here and there…mostly Google searches, books from the library, etc…. I definitely will not run the Apache/IIS duo, as I have seen too much on the nighmares that can cause. I will most likely try running PHP with IIS, along with the existing ASP (which I will convert to PHP when I have more time). I will deal with the messy URL’s and if I come up with anything, I am sure I will have a captive audience. Regarding Zen’s assertions that IIS users are either 1) non-existent or 2) unwilling to share what they know…I would guess that no one using IIS really knows much about databases servers. Most are probably like me…they know enough to keep them running and little more. No one in their right minds, possessing any knowledge whatsoever, would have relied on IIS until recently. IIS 6, form what I can gather, is the first MS server that has the least bit of stability. The collections application we have here (that is called by the ASP) was built on FoxPro, so I would guess and place good money on that being another burden I will have to face down the road. If it works fine running concurrently, then I will just deal with it.

I’ll get this damned thing working. Luckily, with my personal hosting, I don’t have these problems.

Re: ThanksSencer!!Anyone tried TXP w/ IIS & 2003 Server, preexisting ASP

If it helps, I’ve just managed to set up TextPattern on one of the company servers where I work for a bit of a test project (don’t tell the infrastructure guys!) — We’re running 2003 with IIS6.0, PHP 5 and MySql 5. Apart from not yet working out how to get the non-messy URL schemes working, everything else is running like a charm.

I’m predominantly a C#/ASP.Net developer so my working knowledge of PHP is pretty atrocious, and I last installed MySQL on a RH Linux box sometime back in ’98, but all that given, I managed to get everything working after a couple of hours of swearing (PHP was the culprit, surprisingly).

All that aside, I’m happy to help with any IIS / Win 2003 issues — I certainly don’t want to fall into category 2!

Ian.
