Speed of Dreamhost
Having been on Dreamhost for a few months now, I’m baffled the download speeds are as slow as they are. 10-20 KB/s is as much as I get when I download one of my own files. Of course I must take into consideration that I am located in Denmark, Scandinavia, and Dreamhost is in US. So the distance may reduce the speed to some extent … Anyway, having had another US host before dreamhost
Are other Dreamhost users download speeds as slow as mine? Anything to do about it to increase the speed?
I figure Dreamhost limits the speed by purpose, in order to reduce the actual bandwidth, since they oversell as hell, in order to offer ridiculously cheap 120 GB monthly bandwidth…
I just don’t see many complaints around the net on the issue of Dreamhost download speed…

Re: Speed of Dreamhost
Tried now on my Dreamhosted site, 100~130 KB/sec for an mp3. file.

Re: Speed of Dreamhost
same problem here. just bought me some dreamhost hosting a few weeks ago for testing purposes. (they just increased the diskspace to 20gb and the traffic to 1TB!) but its very slow for me too. i’m downloading with apprx 100-130KB/s while my connection is able to get ~780KB/s max. i already considered contacting their support, but then again its very cheap and i dont really rely on it…

Re: Speed of Dreamhost
Interesting since you are both located off-US, in europe (I assume Swiss and German right?) and get 100+ KB/s – while I get only 10-20 KB/s … Weird stuff…
When you signed up did you use a promo code or via a referral? I have the paranoid thesis that they place those people on “lesser” servers;-/
Or am I crazy?
Btw; do you run your PHP as 4 or 5? As Apache mod or CGI?

Re: Speed of Dreamhost
You’re crazy? :P Kidding, sorry. I used a promo code and payed about 20 Dollars for a year of hosting, so I should be in ghetto too (assuming something like that even exists).
I don’t know the nature of your site but mine’s isn’t exactly a download site: I host like 3 files and nobody download them. I’m saying this because maybe they put a cap on sites devoted to downloads. If yours doesn’t offer massive downloads then I’d contact them and ask why you get such stingy download speeds.

Re: Speed of Dreamhost
I think I’ll send them a support ticket then, ‘cause I don’t have much stuff running on my site. A few downloads etc.

Re: Speed of Dreamhost
Do you have visitors reporting low download speeds from your site? Otherwise could be a problem between you and DH servers. If you want, do provide the URL of your site and I can download something and report you back the speeds.

A nice track if you like fast, stomping, pounding german-style techno/trance ;-)
Funny thing is, my FTP uploads are like 10x faster – at 200 KB/s …

Yep, there you see. Now I’ve sent them a support ticket – I’ll post here what they end up saying ;-)

Re: Speed of Dreamhost
Be aware that it is a php script that is serving the download, so other factors may be coming into play as well.

It’s also possible the above could be reduced to a formula that might explain the slowness:
“(cause!) effect.”
