keep index.html while working on txp using index.php & clean urls

working on transferring a static website over to Textpattern – and it’s handy that it has an index.html, so the website is served as normal, but client can see progress by accessing index.php & viewing Txp-version

however, .htaccess file had to be removed and Txp set to use messy URLs

could anyone outline how you’d go about keeping .htaccess & using clean urls, but still having index.html as the default for browsing visitors? is it possible?

I prefer Sencer’s advice: develope in a subfolder, then move the site to the root.
