Layout /Skin /Template - relationship
What are they?
- Skin?
- Template?
- Layout?
How do these terms relate to each other?
U seem to use the words slightly different here compared to other blogware. Is it so, or is it just me misinterpreteing?

Re: Layout /Skin /Template - relationship
These terms don’t relate to TXP that much. The terms you should become familiar with are : pages, forms and style.
Pages are essentially the core html of your site. Forms are snippets of html that can easily be inserted into the primary page using a shorthand (convenient for if you have multiple headers, footers using multiple pages, just insert the shorthand). And style is well the CSS stylesheet. You can have multiples of each of these and there is a lot you can do with them.
I’d suggest taking a look at the manual, if you haven’t: http://textpattern.net/
Hope I answered your question.

Mostly when these terms are used the ready made layouts for Textpattern sites are meant, like you can find at Textgarden.org.

Re: Layout /Skin /Template - relationship
My experience with other CMS/blogware is that a ‘skin’ is a modular way of changing the appearance of the site. My limited experience with TextPattern is that the term ‘layout’ is used in this context. However, my experience with applying different layouts in textpattern has not been a resounding success. In many other apps, you simply ‘upload’ and ‘apply’ a skin, and have the ability to switch back and forth at will, but with txp, you seem to have to edit core elements and lose the ability to switch back without undoing your edits. I don’t mind doing this, as I don’t plan to re-skin often, but it does seem somewhat limited.
More problematic, though, is the fact that – based on my experience applying ‘Gentle Calm’ to my test site – you have to edit page templates to include any new sections you create. I applied Gentle Calm as documented, then created a few new sections. The new sections were not visible, and I traced the problem to the fact that the associated pages had ‘section-specific’ code. Maybe I’m missing the whole point, but I find this very limiting. I can imagine putting ‘extra’ code in there to give special treatment to some sections, but I would expect ‘all’ sections to at least ‘work’ in a basic fashion after applying a new layout. Maybe this is a unique element of the Gentle Calm layout; it’s the only one I’ve tried so far.
This is my post in the troubleshooting forum on this
