Re: Textpattern Template Competition
This is great … I’m interested to see an eCommerce-type theme instead of just blog templates.

Let me get back to you on the eCommerce thing :) Well, that is if Textdrive’s Bidwell would stop taking vacations on me…

Yep, I was curious too why there is not one.

Submissions are not limited to blog-style templates, so it is possible for there to be different categories of submissions.

I sent a couple e-mails to Dean and the people at Textdrive but haven’t gotten any response yet. I understand that they’re all incredibly busy right now with all the merger stuff :D

But can we get them to enter the competition? :)

That’s the predicament…I don’t want to lose great designers to a judging position.
Now, enough talk – you have a theme to design :D

If you take a look at that theme, notice the control bar at the very top of the screen. The icons allow you to switch things on and off — font sizes, sIFR, site width and column arrangement. With Textpattern’s focus on separation of content and presentation, themes with these kinds of features will be useful to those of us with no design skills.
I second the notion that some themes for corporate/small business purposes are needed. Also, themes resembling the new “multicolumn” layouts of A List Apart and TextDrive would be great to have in a library of Textpattern themes.

Origami is quite impressive. Quite heavy too… 38k of CSS, over 100k of javascript. But it’s pretty without reaching out, and the design is quite well thought.

Re: Textpattern Template Competition
While an overall pleasing if code-heavy design, the white background doesn’t extend all the way to the page bottom and the top icons and text are another example of low useability due to lack of contrast. I had to turn up the brightness of the monitor and practically put my nose of the screen to read the word “personalize”. If it wasn’t for the “tool tips” on the Help and icons I would have had to do the same for them.

Regarding the Typogarden contest (they so stole that name from us), one of the entries I found very interesting was Kyle Neath’s Hemingway because it really broke free from the standard 2-columnness of most blogs. It was both well designed and easily customizable, and that was why it snagged 3rd prize.
I hope to see something like that come out of this contest.
