There are several wysiwyg plugins outhere. I don’t know if they are good or not.
For the images, I totally agree. Look at the upm_image_popper plugin, but be advised it’s no longer maintain.
(However you can join the Kibo for President campaign, and help us lobby Zem&Sencer to make it core).
