New install - 404 Comment not found
I install textpattern (a breeze – about 2 minutes)
I check out the admin (10 minutes of browsing)
I load my new homepage
I click on the sample comment
404 – Page not found
I delete the sample article and write my own, turn on comments
Load the homepage, click the comment link…
404 – Page not found.
What gives?
Pre-flight check
All checks passed!

Re: New install - 404 Comment not found
Thanks for the link as that looks like exactly my problem, but the text in the FAQ is incorrect and I don’t have a “messy” option. Where can I access this feature? Textpattern version: 4.0.3 (r1188)
“The simplest solution is to use “messy” URLs instead (textpattern > admin > preferences).”
I have the following options:
Admin -> Site Preferences
or
Admin -> Advanced preferences
I do not have “messy” (or Clean) option on the above pages nor on any admin page I can find.
On the ‘Site Preferences’ page I have a “Site URL” option
on the ‘Advanced Preferences page I have a “Max URL length” option

Re: New install - 404 Comment not found
The FAQ is not wrong; please examine your preferences page more closely. Also, based on your diagnostics posted above, your .htaccess
file is empty or missing. Correct that, and you’ll probably be able to use clean URLs.
See also this FAQ entry.

Re: New install - 404 Comment not found
I found the default .htaccess file and changed the following line
#RewriteBase /relative/web/path/
to
#RewriteBase /
and pages and comments now load. Thank you for the links to get me to this.
The install was so clean and simple, no errors nor warnings and the diags come up 100% clean, that’s what made this so confusing.
As for the FAQ instructions, I’m new and may be overlooking them but…
As stated in the FAQ “textpattern > admin > preferences” is where to look
(there are two pref. pages under this location, that is what is not clear, why not be clear?)
- Admin + Preferences defaults to the “Site Preferences” page where the word “messy” does not exist.
- Admin + Preferences also has a second Pref. option page where the word “messy” also does not exist “Advanced preferences”.
Here’s the Preference pages from my install, there is no mention of Messy and there is no other location I can see that matches the FAQ.

Did you look under “Permanent link mode”?

Re: New install - 404 Comment not found
Didn’t didn’t look there since “permanent link mode” isn’t mentioned in the FAQ, doesn’t contain the FAQ keywords URL or Messy and I have no idea what “permamnent link” means.
Actual location:
The simplest solution is to use “messy” URLs instead (textpattern > admin > preferences > permanent link mode > messy).
