Mailing list used for "site/blog updated" emails?

I currently have one of my customer’s sites using feedblitz so that when people visit, and aren’t familiar with RSS (as it is a relatively new phenomenon), they can subscribe to get an email when the site changes or when a post is made.

My Host provides me with a mailing list, which when an individual subscribes, places their name, email, and information in a database from which a newsletter draws its addresses.

Is there a way to make a list like this work to “announce” an update, or a new post, etc? (automatically)?

Has anyone had a go at something like this?

Maybe the new Newsletter Manager plugin will work.

It will, by not automatically (it won’t send notice when a new article is published).
